$140-150 for a 4x Dual format? Sounds pretty warm to me. Then maybe throw in a coupon and rebate or two and we'll be cookin ;)

First, it says Lite-On is making DVD+R/RW, not dual format, if you read the article correctly, and second, those prices are for volume vendor purchasing. Retail will be at least $199-249.

Where do you see 150 for dual format drives??

This is what I see:

"and US$140-150 for DVD+R/RW drives"

I don't see where they say dual format drives will be that cheap.

I'm almost ready to bite on this one... but one question...

I would really like to have this to create back-ups of my movies on DVD so I can keep the originals in excellent condition and I would also use it for Data backups... but anyway...

Is there a good way to back up movies on DVD without having to re-encode and lose quality?

Also... what about the new blue laser technology that has the ability to burn 27 GB on one disc. Are they any closer to bringing those out? Might that explain the sudden price drop on these drives?

A. There still isn't a good way to backup DVDs without losing quality if they are over 4.7 gigs in size. THere are programs that will move the contents around and others that will slightly compress them,

B. Blue laser is out in Japan but it will cost you Big Bucks!! Toshiba is coming out with an alternative based on the same technology that is more compatible with current players but don't look for this tech to be "affordable" for some time.

US Retail will be $199.00. This will definately be a dual format drive. I got this from calling Lite-On. More then 1/3 less then the price of the Sony...Sounds pretty hot to me.

My hope is to be able to buy a dvd burner by x-mas for free after rebates. I have gotten 52x24x52 for free recently so I am hoping to get a good deal on the dvd+-rw models. Ya for competition.

4x writes at 5.5mb/s

I'm quoting Kenshin from cdfreaks.com

The DigiTimes articles are not always true. They just quote what the Taiwanese companies mainly in Taipei and nearby tell them which may be true or false or just marketing tactics.

so don't hold your breath, especially about that price since lite-on is working with sony (look at link above, talkin bout Dual)

Blue ray dvds: Not yet out in japan, should be sometime in april by sony, with initial recorder (not *writer*) costing about $4k.

And, OEM 4x +R/RW Necs (and rebadges) go to vendors for +- $150.
