Whistler Radar Detector 22.00

Thanks Jokersmoker! Someone just stole my Passport 8500 yesterday so I'll be needing another one. I guess this one will have to do. Just ordered it.

As a note: My passport saved me lots of tickets so I think it paid for itself in the 2 years I've had it.

Edit: Total cost came out to $30.10 for me.

nice deal. But this is one of those things were if you're gonna rely on it, you're going to want it to work.

I have the same questions that woodscomp does.

and does anyone know if these are illegal/legal in the state of texas?

It's legal in Texas as far as I know. I remember it is only illegal in two locations and Texas is not one of them.

Chieh

There's only 1 thing worse than no radar detector, and that's a bad one. Sure, you may get this for $25 or whatever, but that first speeding ticket you get will make this a very cold deal. Get a V1 and be as protected as you can be.

Virginia is one of them, they will remove your detctor and smash it right there in the road.

sorrie dude, they're not allowed to destroy your private property. if the cop does that, you can sue the crap out of whoever he works for. the only thing he can do is write u a nice ticket and tell u to have a "nice" day 🙂 far as i know, va, washington d.c. are not allowed to have radar detectors. u just have to use common sense "watching out for cars high beeming you" and when all the traffic start slowing down. out of all my years driving, i have received more speeding tickets when i had the radar detector than when i dont have it. common sense is your best bet against police.

That's only if you use a crappy radar detector as an excuse to drive even faster.

carreview.com posts a 4/5 review for this unit.

I got mine today from buy.com. Driving to work tomorrow. Will have some impressions by then. 😛 Driving around locally today I noticed it picks up all the shopping centers, but even V1s do that.

Ok, first off, all interested please read my long post in this thread:

previous whistler thread

And I am not trying to flame, jokersmoker has brought us many great deals, but i am simply sharing my knowledge of the general topic of radar detectors and how well they work. And as far as I know, detectors are legal everywhere in the US except Virginia and Washington, D.C. They are mostly illegal in Canada except for a few provinces. But the conclusion I came to after getting my first and last ticket (I had a $330 Escort detector) is that it's useless unless you drive a stealth bomber...

I thought California outlawed them too...

Only $6 shipping to cali, not too bad. Tempting...

I live about 4 miles from this place. Hopefully they'll let me pick it up in person and avoid the BS shipping and handling charges.

You said it. It is true that a $300 unit will give better protection, but if you use common sense and are cheap like me, then $22 is not much to pay. Just don't think that this is going to be your excuse to drive like Dale Jr. I got in on the Buy.com deal a few days ago so I won't be buying this, but the price seems great as long as the shipping is reasonable.

thesaint37 was correct in stating that Virginia and Washington D.C. are the only places in the US that detectors are illegal.

Just an FYI that the review posted further up in this thread is not for the 1610. It is for an earlier model without laser detection and appears to include VG-2 protection that the 1610 does not. I saw this review earlier in the week and it was confusing, but the model number is incorrect.

What he said.

Don't waste your money on the cheap ones as all you will get is a false sense of security and a few tickets. Go with V1 - worth every penny.

Must every thread that concern radar detectors be crapped on by pompus V1 owners? Buy this detector and drive with common sense, or drive like an asshole and buy a V1. Anyone that really requires a $400 detector deserves a ticket. I personally wish worse on them.

Jeez, did somebody pee in your coffee this morning? Actually, I'll take your argument one step farther and say you shouldn't even NEED a radar detector if you drive with common sense. Don't speed, and you don't get a ticket. However, those of us who drive long distances daily might like to get to our destinations faster than the law would allow. I know this, I accept this, I bought a V1 to protect me from this and it has done so 99.9% of the time. I got nailed with a laser gun in Wisconsin doing 81 in a 65. Nothing will prevent this, not a V1. My V1 went off, and I knew I was dead. My ticket was $225 (ouch). Is my V1 great? Yep. IS it perfect? Obviously not, otherwise it would have a psychic band for predicting where cops are going to be. Has it paid for itself 1000x over? Absolutely.

These are examples to demonstrate your intelligence? No one pissed in my coffee and you have not change my opinion.
