Anyone have experience with Whistler Beta 1 and the KT133 platform?? I just got Beta 1 courtesy of MSDN, and I wanted to go ahead and give it a test run, but would it be adviseable?? Here is what I have:

Duron 800
KT7 Raid
Plextor 12/10/32 CDRW
Toshiba 12x DVD
SB Live! Value
Hercules GF2 GTS
3COM NIC

Any thoughts? Does it automatically set up dual boot options like Win 2k Pro since I have Win 98 installed already?? If anyone could help me out, I'd appreciate it.

Well, you would do exactly that, be a test run. So there are gonna be plenty of bugs in there for you to furret out, and that is why they realease beta version to the public... So if you want, to be a ginea pig, then by all means. It is a dirty job, but someone has to do it.

Exactly, if you want to mess around with it go ahead.. but don't expect the stability and compatibility you have with your win2k setup.

I tried a while back, but was just too unstable on my system. It looks good and is worth the try, but don't think about using it as your main OS. Also, it does the dual boot just like win2k.(the CD is bootable)

I don't have the Beta 2 CD...this latest shipment of MSDN only had Beta 1. So would it not be worth it to install Beta 1??

I dl a warz version of it, and the installation wasn't very smooth, so be very patient while you are installing it. For some strange reason the keywboard would not work, (regular serial not usb) and the overall system performance is very sluggish. To my own suprise, I didn't encounter any compatability issues excluding the keyboard Phenon' , hehe.

There's a problem with logon in beta2,

Its a known problem, here's the fix :) enjoy

---Windows XP 2428 Logon Fix---

- Start in safe mode
- Go to Start-Run then type Regedit
- Go here HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
\Winlogon.
- Once you are here find Activation Required and modify the value to 0

I registered for the whistler newsletter a while back and also sent them an email to become a beta tester, but i haven't heard back from them. Any ideas on how to become a beta tester or how to get a beta version of whistler? I'm not looking for a freebie! I want to test it and fully intend to buy a subscription in September.

Bottom line: If you use your computer and don't want to chance messing something up, then don't do it. FOR ANY SOFTWARE. Betas are betas cause they are buggy or they would be the Gold release (final). If you have a need to find out whats coming up in software for your business create an isolated computer (so you don't mess up the network with bad packets or something) and test there. Actually, you should do the same at home if you are testing. I wouldn't run it on my main comp.

Over the years I learned, the hard way, not to ever install Beta anything from Microsoft. The only exception is when I have a free system that I don't need for anything else. Good grief, Microsoft's "final" releases are buggy enough to make a person feel like a beta-tester.

I was running it on my KT7RAID, and all was stable except when I tried to play a game. The only game I got working was Deus Ex, but with a lot of wierd artifacts. It was pretty stable, but wanted more RAM than I have (96), and was pretty sluggish. I HAD to disable all the new gui features too. They are NO good. It was build 2296. I am back to 98SE and Redhat 7 now (Having some trouble with gforce 2 MX and xwindows atm though:( )

Beta 1 is older, but still cool/fun to play with. I only have Intel machines, so I couldn't tell you how it runs on Athalon systems. I say if you have the time, install it dual boot with your Win98 system and upgrade to Beta2 when it is released on MSDN. I didn't keep beta 1 installed for long, but since 2416 was released I have run most builds since. The latest Beta2 candidate is much nicer than previous builds and performance is better. Although my Voodoo5 still doesn't have good drivers :)

PS 2428 is NOT Beta2.

Has the incompatibility issue with NAV 2001 been resolved with Beta 2? I have beta 2 but will pass on it if the problem is still there.

I have Norton Antivirus 2000 and that works just fine. Was there a particular feature that didn't work?

Don't install it unless you have plenty of time on your hands to get your original setup back, because you'll be wanting to real soon.
