Looks to me like Mr. Gates is looking to make more enemies. These anti-piracy devices are really annoying, and MS isn't even the worst of the lot. Any Quickbooks owners out there?

If people at Apple are smart enough to cut their hardware price
and attract the MS users would be great. Apple has finnaly
a good Unix based MAC O/S X .It is freaking stable and
very cool looking gui. Even though I've been using Windows
since 3.1 , Now I think it is too much How Microsoft wants to
implement Whatever they think is right. Never asks the users any
opinion. Enough is Enough .
This is the best time than ever to some competitor to move in
the Microsoft invaded teritory and teach some good lesson which
they need to learn.
Apple is in the top place more than any body else!

Annoying anti-piracy measures are great! Micro$h*t expanded its market penetration through controlled leakage via piracy. I welcome anything that makes future versions harder to migrate and use. Linux gets easier to use every day, and this will only make it more attractive.

Lets look at where Micro$oft is really aiming this. At guys like me. I have 4 computers in my house; one for me and three for my significant others, all running on my PURCHASED ORIGINAL. Microsoft wants me now to spend the bucks on three additional copies for each of the computers on the network (sharing the internet connection). Yeah, I know the licensing crap, that I am supposed to buy an original for each machine, but this was for the corporate folks buying into hundreds of copies when it was originally written. I suppose you can call me a pir8te, but I did buy their product (all the way from Dos 2.0).

If you think this is bad, wait until you read an article about how Micro$oft wants to have the ability to "deactivate" illegal software that they find out there in cyberspace. One day you boot to windows, the next day nothing. Deactivated by the Big Brothers at Micro$oft!

This is really targeted at putting the little guys out of business. It's so obvious that even I think the FED should get involved.
By not putting this restriction on OEM's and having it on retail guys, the Mom and Pop guys are at real disadvantage. It's sure to be a BIG selling point at BB and Compusa, and the big internet OEMs, "if you dont buy a brand name, when you upgrade anything in it, your pc wont work anymore until you call MS and beg them to let you have another license, same deal if you have to rebuild the system. But if you buy our Brand name models you dont have all that aggravation."

I think it's the most rediculous thing I have ever heard of. Microsoft apparently doesn't realize that the average home user will just be annoyed and not want to buy their products, and like everyone else has been pointing out, software pirates will find ways around it.

Personally, I'll go buy a Mac before I have to call Microsoft to install software that I buy.

One thing to keep in mind is yes we all will have working versions all cracked. But there couple million people that won't. Its all about odds and Microsoft will make a lot of money. But I agree with all of you its totaly crazy to have something like this in affect. But it won't change anything. So I'll download and install a cracked version on 10 pc just to piss them off. But it won't piss them off,it will just make me feel good. lol
Thanks

Since the "crack" is out so early, MS could very well change/improve it before the Fall. Heh, I wonder what Anand thinks about it -- after all AT will eventually move to Whistler for product testing and he and his staff constantly change hardware and reinstall the OS. Having to get MS's approval 30 times a day might get a tad annoying after a while...?

Since this protection would be the dumbest anti-pirating protection ever, Micro$aft must have introduced it for another purpose...

Uhm... world-domination? ;)

I think I'll buy some Apple shares (and maybe some Redhat) just before Whistler is released ;-)

HAHA This makes me laugh! Well now I might just download the OEM ISO when it comes out that will be cracked or come with a crack. I am sure there will also be sites that will provide cracks that will enable users to crack the version they can buy also so maybe I will just buy the personal edition and then crack that. This is no biggie and I refuse to call MS every time I reformat my HD. They can kiss my ass!

We'll end up with the trustworthy folk who always buy their licenses being greatly inconvenienced while the hackers who never pay will get the version that has no annoyances whatsoever. It's so lame it's just gotta backfire on MS. :(

If they made the OS affordable in the first place it would not be such a problem. They are way overcharging for full versions. I personally think $50 is about right. Anything else is just money made because they can. I don't know the costs of making it but it can't be much more than any other large program.
