Whiskey gift - what to buy?

I need to buy a gift to take to an event. I am still trying to find the best item to buy within a 100-200 max limit. I've been doing some research but I'm still unsure what to buy. Any specific items to look at? I thought about a decanter as well.

Can't go wrong with Evan Williams. Save you money in the end. Look, if this were a valid question, you'd just go to a liquor store and find some whiskey in the price range you're looking for, you're not drinking it. Shitty brag thread if I ever saw one.

Get a nice whiskey (or two different flavors if you're trying to look ritzy) at 50-70$ and call it a deal. It's the thought not the price, and if you are seriously concerning yourself on price of gift for something that will be pissed away I'd re-evaluate your priorities in life. Just my inner scrooge speaking 🙂

Any specific recommendations? That's what I'm hoping to find out through this thread

Lol, how is this a brag thread? I don't know much about whiskey and I'm trying to get recommendations. I obviously want to present a good gift even though I'm not drinking it. I will check out Evan Williams though. What do you think about WhistlePig? http://www.whistlepigwhiskey.com/

I like Ardbeg, Laphroaig (cask strength is a +), and generally Isla's but it's all personal preference. If you bought the two I listed, that would be pretty tasty and nice, IMO. Each one is around $60 I believe. Costco also has Blue and Gold label Johnny Walker, but I'm more of a straight shooter. I don't like blends, generally.

I figured the 'e' ruled out Bourbon 😵

Most people don't understand the spelling convention, and some get it wrong ;^)

Scotch drops the "e", but all other brown spirits use the "e" AFAIK. There's one exception for an American whiskey that used it as a tribute to his Scottish roots, but I can't remember which it was.

Because there are a million really good whiskey review sites and or forums. All you had to do was google and you would have your answer.

Do you know what kind or label of Whiskey/Whisky this person usually drinks?

There are so many different kinds it would help narrow down your search parameters.

FYI Whistle Pig is a Canadian rye that is advertised as being from the US. It's good stuff though.

whiskey is such a diverse category, can you narrow it down to a particular region or style at least?

+1

(i'd go for Ardbeg 10yo)

No love for Chivas?

Whiskey = american spelling

Whisky = canadian / british / scottish spelling

I just wish whisky wasn't so expensive. I enjoy it but hate buying a $40 bottle and not drinking it.

I'm mostly a Scotch guy...know a little bit about bourbon.

I would say spending more than 100 bucks for a fifth of whiskey is definitely past the point of diminishing returns.

So, Scotch - Glenmorangie 18 is somtimes around $100. Macallan makes a couple of 15 yrs near same price point. Pretty neutral, great tasting whiskeys.

Also, Chivas is a pile of garbage.

Meh, tried Royal Salute once and liked it.

There's nothing wrong with Chivas. It's one of my favorite blends. People like pissing on blends cause they somehow got the impression it's a mass produced crap that doesn't take skill to make. You can get shitty blends, just as you can get shitty malts. It takes a lot of work to get a good repeatable product. That's a blend's biggest downside; you never get surprised. It's the same thing bottle after bottle. By the same token, you never get a bad batch either. It depends on what you want from a whisky.
