Do you have any examples of bourbon and scotch you like or hate? Depending on your taste, scotch is easier to recommend based on the region of scotland (each region has their own signature flavor notes) with plenty in that price range (21-30 year). Bourbons are harder to find in that price range - mostly limited editions of the known names...

Price generally doesn't matter to me, my current favorite whisk(e)y are:
Glenlivet 12/15, lagavulin 16, johnny walker blue king george v, woodford reserve, bookers, blantons, crown royal xr. Except the jwblue kgV and cr xr, they are all <$85 and I prefer their flavor over their more expensive brethren.

i've never seen canadian in my dad's bar so i'm not about to start buying him it now.

and i maintain that nothing good comes from canada except cheap oil and the occasional playmate.

If you can find it, the only bourbon that comes to mind in that price range is a Parker's Heritage. Specifically, the 27-year if you can find it (should be impossible at B&M since it's been out for so long) - I've tasted it once, along with a 25-year and their golden anniversary. All fantastic, but read up on the 27-year and you'll understand why it was so sought after.

Other than that...check out the stores near you that sell the most bourbon and see if you can't locate a Pappy Van Winkle bourbon. Well worth it if you can find them in time.

Which reminds me that I should be out hunting too...

And Bourbon is pisswater. Scotch and Rye. Gibson's makes a really smooth 18 year old rye whiskey. It's called Gibson's Rare, and it is just that, rare and hard to find.

For less expensive bottles, Bookers Bourbon is truly a unique experience and should be stocked in any bourbon/whiskey drinkers cabinet for those extra cold winter nights.

Just a heads up for people planning to stock up on Scotch.

Apparently, many Scotch distilleries have reported a massive boom in orders this year from Asia. Many have now stopped taking orders from wholesalers/distributors, as they approaching being sold out of many of their aged malts.

Severe shortages of good, mature quality Scotch are predicted unless orders drop.

Given the need to age malt whiskey for a considerable period of years, unless orders do drop, shortages are likely to deteriorate.

If you're a fan of BIG SMOKE, then the Lagavulin. Be advised that one 's an aquired taste, though.

The Glenmorangie is balanced between spice, caramelized fruit, and a little smoke. Note that I have never had a bottle from this distillery that I didn't like... a LOT.

The Balvenie is a classic Sherry'd scotch. And the 17 is one of the best at that price point.

I picked up some McClellands speyside Scottish whiskey the other day, it seemed to be a middle of the road, not good, but not bad either. Going to buy some Highland whiskey next.

What I drink from time to time is Makers Mark, its very smooth.

Next weekend my wife and I are having some friends over, thinking about picking up some Jack Daniels with honey.

Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey is a 94 proof, small-batch whiskey distilled in Denver, Colorado. Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey is the first microdistillery making whiskey in Colorado and the Rocky Mountains as well as one of the first in the country. Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey is the first of a new category known as "Rocky Mountain Straight Whiskey".

The whiskey is made from a unique four-barley fermented wash that consists of carbon filtered Rocky Mountain water and western barley that is grown in the Northern Rockies. The wash is distilled in a Vendome Copper custom-made combination Pot / Column still and then aged in 50 gallon heavily charred (#4 char), American white oak whiskey barrels made by World Cooperage in Lebeanon, Missouri. The barrels age for between two and five years in a humidified, climate controlled environment. Ten to twelve barrels are combined to make each batch consisting of 2500-3000 bottles. Each bottle is filled by hand and each label is hand written identifying the distiller, batch number, the youngest barrel in the batch and a unique comment.
