Not loud at all but it's really getting on my nerves.

Varying pitch, up and down sorta.

It doesn't seem like fan noise to me.

I have a Western Digital 120 GB drive......could that be the culprit?

Try starting your computer up without the hard drive power hooked up. It probably is the whine.

Try what amdskip said.

It probably is the WD. My brother pulled out his server to do some maintenance and put it by my computer. It has a WD harddrive and needless to say, there is a very noticable kind of "whine" present that wasn't before ;)

Okay I finally got my hands dirty.

It is DEFINATELY my HD doing the whine.

Is this something to worry about? Should I think about getting a Maxtor soon?

The whine probably does not indicate a problem developing with the drive. I've got a WD 15.3 Gig HD that I bought in summer 2000. It has always made a whine. Otherwise, it's worked fine. Then, I bought an 80 Gig WD 7200 HD in June 2003 that runs very quiet. So, my experience indicates some inconsistency in noise among different drives of the same manufacturer. I don't know how Maxter rates in the consistency-of-noise-level dept.

I think, if I were buying a new drive, whatever brand, I would return it and ask for a replacement soon after purchase and while under warranty, if it made an unacceptable level of noise. I wish I had done that back in 2000, but I did not realize at the time that the HD was the source of the whine noise.

Nah, the whine is why people buy WD ... it's like the Ferrari exhaust note. ;)
