whining monitor

i have two identical monitors.

one frequently emits a very high pitched whine. so high pitched that several friends of mine cant hear it. but i know its real and its coming from the monitor cuz it goes away when i turn off the monitor. a high pitched eeeeeeee tells me something is wrong, but it actually only occurs when the monitor's refresh rate (in advanced display properties) is set to 60hz. at higher refresh rates, the whine goes away. no other setting changes affect the whine. it seems weird that at a more stressful refresh rate, the monitor doesnt whine. the whine is similar to the very faint noise you hear when you turn on a normal tube tv, except continuous and whinier. the other identical monitor operates at 60hz just fine (i dont know why they are at 60hz, seems to be windows default and whenever i change it to 70hz it likes to go back to 60hz eventually), but it is hooked into a different type of video card...

should i be concerned?

in the past, the same monitor that whines has had a faint horizontal lining running down the monitor (like an interlace efect or something), but this comes and goes too, and is also related to refresh rate. both monitors are MAG Innovision 19 inch, and only about a year old

Simply put, monitors should be seen not heard. A high pitched whine is not necessarily an indication that the monitor is dying. There are a number of things that can cause a whiny high-pitched sound. It is almost always due to vibration of a component in the horizontal circuits, most often the flyback transformer or horizontal output transformer. Changing the resolution changes the horizontal and vertical scan frequencies thus the offending component may stop vibrating at that resonant frequency. Since the unit is only a year olf odds are it is still under warranty. Call Mag tech support.

changing the resolution does not get rid of the 'eeeeeeeeeee,' only increasing the refresh rate from 60hz to 70hz cures it

um...why would anyone want to set the refresh rate at 75 or LOWER? I set mine at 85hz, its better for the eyes.

My bro's Viewsonic began humming yesterday and the picture went wonky. After an hour or so, it began to smell funny. Luckily it was still under warranty and is now RMA'd.

as i said in my post, my computer seems to like to make my monitor run at 60hz, it tends to change back to that every so often without me noticing. i dont want to run at 60hz, but i honestly dont notice much of a difference, and the real point is that it concerns me that my monitor is making a noise in what common sense tells me should be the least stressful mode
