Whine coming from the engine

This started on Friday as I was leaving work. What's strange is I drove it early that day to get lunch and the noise wasn't there.

It sounds very similar to an alternator whine coming through your stereo but I have determined that not to be it for my case. You can definitely hear it when you start it up but gets lower when I shift into drive or reverse. When I'm driving I can't hear it anymore probably because it's getting drown out by road noise. I can't pin point exactly where it is coming from but it is coming from the engine bay and more so on the left side. I checked all fluids and they're ok.

Any ideas?

At this point it's like asking "My computer is making noise".

Left side when looking from the front of the car with the hood up (passenger side) ?

If it's clearly from the engine bay and not under the car or from the back of the engine bay (ie: from the transmission), it's probably just a pulley or idler bearing. The cold weather tends to bring out the squeals as winter starts.

Are you sure that the whine isn't coming from behind the engine?

I think it's the one in his Sig


But if it's not and in any case it's a Ford then it's prolly the power steering pump

Even on the Lexus, it could be the PS pump going out. It's almost 10 years old and while fluids could be fine, the pump could be shot.
