Call me an idiot for not knowing my benefits at work.

This is my 5th year working for this company. At 5 years, my company grants employees an extra week of vacation per year. My 5 year anniversary is around August 1st, so I assumed that at best I would get my extra week of vacation then, or at worst my extra week would be granted at the start of next year.

Not so. I just found out that the extra week gets granted at the start of my 5th year.

:):):):):)

This is the perfect medicine for 4 extremely crappy work days in a row.

EDIT: I knew there had to be some sort of catch to my good fortune yesterday. So I decided that I would use three days of vacation next week and sent my manager an email with the request. She's the type that immediately replies to every email, so when she didn't answer for an hour I knew the news couldn't be good. She basically gave me the "if you are confident project X will be complete on time, then go ahead and go. But its up to your best judgement" answer, knowing fully well that because of her inept decisions project X will still be ongoing years after the earth finally explodes.

What really galls me is that I have taken maybe 5 sick days in the last 5 years, I haven't had any vacation time in over a year, I always get to work on time, I never leave early, and now that I have gotten this extra week of vacation it looks like I won't be able to take it at any time in the foreseeable future.

The moral, kids, is to never graduate college. Stay there forever. Bah, the purpose of my life seems to be to serve as a warning to others.

"Thanks for the five years of hard work, Ned. Here is a extra week of vacation. Of course, you can never ever use it, but we wanted you to know that we care." Bastards.

Yea your mood will turn sour again when they "take it into consideration" on your next review that you "took too much vacation this year." :p ;)

1 week = 40 hours. Regular employees earn 8 hours VL and 8 hours SL each month. 384 maximum for VL, no maximum for SL. Unused hours will be converted to money when they retire. Senior employees 20+ years earn 10 hours of each per month. I have about 100/120 in hours.

Speaking of vacation...I only work 7 days this month because I had to use up 145 hours or lose it.

Enjoy!

Ditto. I've worked for 3 years now, and I've taken 3 vacation days total, all three being Fridays. I'm too "important" in our small company for me to go on vacation, especially cuz of daily deliverables to 15+ clients :(

And on all three vacation days, I was pulled into ops meetings over the phone for 2+ hours.

Are you sure you want to work a job that treats you that way?

Seconded. Had a good day at work, went way downhill when I came home, spent some time with the little lady, then had some ahole waste 15 minutes of my life and when I expressed my annoyance was called insensitive and a jerk for coming down so hard on him.

So yay me!

tell her youre confident it will be completed on time as long as no one else facks it up while youre on your vacation. then go and have a good time.

The thing is that everyone already knows it is not going to be done on time because my manager keeps tacking on little "additions" here and there. Project X keeps growing on a weekly basis. Just last week two significant items were added onto code that was already in beta testing.

The real moral of the story is that you need to make sure there are others in the office that know your job and who can cover you while you're away playing. The company can't just close up and stop working because you're gone. You know this. :p

What are these additions and are you really that subservient? ;)
