I mark up all my books. I like to argue with the author in the margins.

And, because of all the e-book talk, a word from penny arcade: Text

If I feel the need to make notes, I bust out notebook paper and make notes there. If I absolutely need to keep the notes for longer periods of time I then put the paper into the book. I have *never* marked up a book for note taking reasons. I also do not keep bookmarks i pages, I find it easy to remember what page I last read.

I used to do a lot of document review for a job. It was made very clear to us reviewers that we were never to write on the documents. The only trace of our reviews were to be in our final write ups so we used lots of post-its. The rationale was that during reviews one has lots of interim questions that get resolved further along in the docs and we didn't want to end up in court and have to explain why what we wrote about page 49 never made it into our final reviews.

MOST Textbooks (especially my accounting texts)...highlighter like a road map...different colors for different things I want to emphasize. Notes in the margins, notes on any blank area, inside the front/back covers, etc. THOSE are books I knew I'd be keeping for reference later.
The ones I knew I would be selling however, not a mark anywhere.
Private reading material such as novels, not usually. If there's something I find of particular interest, I MIGHT use a post-it note stuck inside the front cover.

Yes. On the first pass I highlight the important material, then on review i just read the highlighted material

For a textbook.... i highlight stuff that needs to be learned

for a novel, or something of enjoyment... no. i dont see a need to.

Nope. If I write at all, it's typically on a separate pad of paper. Then again, I have a knack for reading. I can tell you the plot of most of the books I've read since middle school (and there have been many), down to direct quotes on some.

Not my personal books. Books for class, only if necessary. Reading several thousand pages of Literary theory and several thousand pages of Contemporary fiction this Spring semester for my Master's, I found it very necessary.
