While looking at DSLRS, i've developed a real desire to get a good SLR instead...

Looking through my old man's slide stuff it just blows me away with the sheer depth/intensity/undefinable 'omfg' factor that i've never really got with digital (although i'll admit i've never seen a really good digital projector in action).

The lack of hassle compared to digital is very attractive too, you go out and have a ball taking the photos (which is one of the main appeals of photography in my mind), then you get home, pack up the film, and send it off to the pros to develop. You can even have the slides mounted if you are really lazy, but it's not a huge hassle doing it yourself. Stick it in a projector (and there are some excellent 2nd hand deals on very good slide projectors to be had), and you've got an instant and amazing medium to show the pictures to your friends and family...

Wheras with digital, you go out and have the same fun taking the photos, but then you've got to go home and sit in front of the computer for hours fiddling with them, which since i spend most of my working hours in front of a computer, isn't what i'd call an attractive prospect (the very thought of using Photoshop for 'fun' leaves me cold i'm afraid, although i'm aware you don't have to use it). You can then get everyone to peer at your (relatively) tiny screen(which you've had to calibrate to approximate the real world), or spend an absolute fortune on a digital projector that looks anywhere near as good as a half-decent slide projector...

I'll concede that digital is vastly cheaper to learn on and use (at least to take each photo, once you start buying laptops, huge HDDs, and printers, those costs kinda escalate), much more flexible (you don't have to change film if you want a different 'film speed' or to use black & white instead of colour), and for those who spend their entire lives on the net, and would be unlikely to ever have people around for a slide evening, slide film makes no sense at all...since it's relatively harder to transfer to show other people (such as ATOT  )(although i assume you can get a digital copy of each slide when you get the film processed?)...

Anyway, that's my mindless witterings on the subject, i've no doubt offended most of you with my heretical nonsensities  I'll probably end up getting a DSLR to learn on, and SLR (shared lens family so nothing is wasted expense) in the longer run...

When you correct my erronous comments above, please try and keep it civil...

Cost: initial investment + your time(free?) vs initial investment + constant monetary outlay for use.

I love slides. FujiChrome rocks.

Love it much more than my DSLR, but the DSLR makes much more practical sense.

Couldn't agree more, but the last thing i'll want to do with my free time after spending ~8 hours in front of the computer each day is spend some more time in front of it at home, heck, i could use that time taking more photos ;)

Canon EOS 3. King daddy of all prosumer, semi-pro film cameras. Or a nice EOS 1, 1n or 1V.
Then there is all the manual focus cameras (think Nikon or Pentax). I don't get your rationale, but it seems like fun to think of all the possibilities.

I think a combination of both is good. I'd use digital more, but film has its qualities.

I can think of at least one more thing you could do with a fancy new digital projector.
