Okay I now am down to the option of an x800 pro sapphire with higher core (475) and lower mem (450) than a rosewill x800 xl with core of (400) and mem of (490)... Now which should I get? I know the sapphire has 12 pipes but can be flashed for all 16. Thats why I'm leaning that way as higher core is better. Also I will be water cooling this card.

Sapphire:

Rosewill:

Which do you think?

From what I've seen on futuremark as well as here, sure XL's are a little cheaper and do have 16 pipes with faster ram, but my pro with 12 pipes can OC way higher than a XL on both ram and core, and score higher. I would imagine that once I unlock it then it would really fly.

Just remembered: XLs support openGL 2.0, pros do 1.5.

My vote is for the XL, the BBA is an awesome card, though alittle bland on the exteroir. And overclocking is not a given.

edit: I heard the vivo edition of the pro card can be unlocked to get the other pipes.

Thats what I was thinking, the saphire may oc higher, and can be flashed to xt normally for 16 pipes, sometimes even xt pe. How much of a difference is opengl 1.5 over 2.0? Would it still be better with the sapphire?

well, nothing really optimizes openGL 1.5 at the time, 2.0 will probably be useful for Unreal 64-bit and Battlefield 2 etc. I'm just biased towards the Pros as I spent 620$ on mine.

Whoa..I don't feel so bad my score isn't as high now. 258 more marks for $300 :Q That's about $1.16 a mark.

But I digress.. If you're confident you can unlock the Pro, or need VIVO go for it.

BBA stands for Built by ATI

anyway, get the x800 xl if performance is important to you. not only does it support opengl 2.0 and has 16 pipes, but it significantly beats the x800 pro on numerous antialiasing/anisotropic benchmarks. the x800 pro never beats the x800 xl at any benchmark. it's right up there with the x800 xt.

The real world performance gap between the xl and xt is usually 5 fps. Not a big difference, and that cannot be detected by my eye.

That's why we said unlock + OC. My card performs alongside XTs right now and I haven't unlocked it.

I can't type, don't mind me.

Your X800 pro is running at 666 mhz? Because that is what you would need to reach the X800XT when not unlocked.

I think you meant that it runs alongside X800XLs.

The Radeon X800XL is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I paid $763.22 Canadian for my 256MB Sapphire Radeon X800XT PE last year. Had I know that the X800XL was going to come out at half the price I paid I would have waited.:frown:

get a 6800 (of some type) and you'll be set for future games (or at least more than a x800 would be)
no x800 card has shader model 3.0

but, that was my opinion, but for your problem, get the sapphire, as they're well known.

Uh, no.

http://apps.ati.com/ATIcompare/

Select x800 Pro, XT and XT PE.

If you look at my sig, I'm running at 555 core, 555 (1110) memory. Now that I look at the ATI site, I'm running at near XT PE speeds.

But, those speeds don't matter without the pipes to back em'. 16 pipes at less speeds will win vs those speeds at 12 pipes.

I'm not sure you understand the concept here.

555mhz * 12 pipes = 6660 megapixels/sec
520mhz * 16 pipes = 8320 megapixels/sec

The X800XTPE will outperform it by over 20%...

XL all the way. its built on a .11 manufacturing process which supposedly yeilds higher clocks (better overclocker)

X800Pro VIVO - $299

But unless you are planning to unlock the pipelines, I'd go with X800XL. Even if you overclock X800XL to 430mhz on watercooling from 400, that's 16x430 = 6880, a fillrate already higher than 570mhz X800Pro. But with watercooling, X800XL should easily reach 450mhz. Also the ram on the X800XL will overclock just as good.

FWIW, I'm able to oc my Powercolor X800XL to 450/575 w/ stock hsf but using additional air cooling around the card.

Basically it boils down to how much risk do you take and how much overclocking do you want to do.

My pro (bought used, and before the XL came out, for about the same price as the XLs are selling for now) overclocks to 575 on the core, maybe higher, I haven't pushed it further... on air (Arctic Cooling ATi Silencer). That puts it right in the same ballpark as an x800XL interms of fillrate.

With a vivo there is a chance of unlocking the pipes and it being significantly faster than the XL, as even at stock speeds, a pro with 16 pipes open > XL. The 0.11 micron core is NOT a strong overclocking core at this point.

The XL is the safe route. You will get decent performance and limited overclocking (10-15% or so). If they are both the same price it's a virtual toss up, but I'd take the pro for the chance of opening the pipes. The end result of an overclocked 12 pipe pro and an overclocked 16 pipe XL will be pretty close, with a likely slight advantage to the XL (comparing a 450 MHz XL to my 575 MHz Pro is ~5% difference.) However a pro vivo has a chance of opening 16 pipes and coming out significantly ahead (~10% faster than the overclocked XL), but that requires a BIOS flash (not for the lighthearted)

What about the x800xl vivo? Any difference with those? They have dual DVI, and an external power connector...

Also, look at this
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-164-034&depa=1
It has dual dvi, an external power connector, an x800xl heat sink, but it says that its an x800 vanilla? Just the wrong picture or what?

I'm torn on this scenario too, I want either an x800pro or x800xl, but I don't know what I want! Maybe the XL's with the external power connector / vivos overclock better?
