Yes I know no standard has been set yet. Well, they have, just about 8 of them :)

If you had to buy a DVD drive now for personal backup and distributing copies of home movies to friends would you get this:

Pioneer DVDR - DVR-A03 DVD Re Writer £350
Writes and reads DVD-R/RW and CD-R/RW formats

I can get a spindle of 100 dvd-r disks for £175. Apparantly 90% of standalone players will play dvd-r discs. I'd get a couple of dvd-rw for daily backup too.

Is there a different drive/media I should get?

Before you plop down your money, do a search around online to see if you can find a listing of compatable players to go with those dvd-rs. I'm a big fan myself of dvd+rw over dvd-r and rw, but thats because I got such a steal on my HP drive, around $75 after rebate...

Also, unless it's a nessessity, you might want to hold off for a couple of months. DVD+R is right around the corner. At this point in time, dvd+ has more financial backing then dvd-. This means that more then likely, inferior product or not, the winner will more then likely be the + standard. If this happens, you might see dvd- go the way of the dodo.

Personally, I haven't found a DVD player that won't play my dvd+rw discs yet, from my Pioneer player to me PS2 to my friends Apex and the neighbors no-name machine.

Hope this helped a bit!
