Deciding between the Optoma HD70 Projector or the Westy 1080P LCD set...

Westy 1080P

Optoma HD70

Both are going for around 1000 bucks and I wouldnt have to pay tax on newegg so thats another incentive... Anyone have either and have comments?

I have an Xbox 360 w/ HD DVD drive, Nintendo Wii, and I am an emerging PC gamer playing CS:Source, FEAR, and battlefield.

Right now I have a 22" Gateway LCD that I like, but I would like something for a REAL HDTV set instead of using a computer monitor (sorta)

Projectors are good for the money. If you get one you want to make sure you have a room that you can control the light in, also a room big enough so you aren't too close to the screen. Also, you should factor in costs for the screen, cables and bulb replacements

As jfall said, it depends on a variety of factors including light control, space, usage type (e.g. if you are the type to turn your tv off and on multiple times a day, maybe a projector shouldn't be your primary display).

Personally I went for both 🙂 40" LCD and projector, and I'm glad I did. I use the LCD daily, and 1-2x a week I'll fire up the projector an evening of tv/movie/gaming.

Coincidentally I also have the HD70, and I really like it a lot.

I read on projectorpeople.com that the HD70 is an amazing projector for the price. Im thinking the westy the more and more I think about it, Although I am a HUGE plasma person.

I dont know If I can justify the LCD! WHAT TO DO?!!?!?!?!

the 37inch Westy will be in my possession shortly I hope.

I just got the 8800 GTS and FX-60, so I'll need the 37inch now.

what did you pay for the 8800GTS?

I don't think I could go back to a conventional display after doing front projection. I think your room and usage is going to be the best way to decide. If it's going to be tough to get the room very dark when you'll be watching, then don't consider doing front projection.

If you're after a cinematic experience and you can get your room very dark when you need to, then front projection gets you a lot for your money.

I wouldn't use a front projector to replace a computer monitor if that's what you're thinking. Having a standard monitor + a huge screen makes a lot of sense to me vs. a standard computer display and then a larger LCD display.

How far away are you going to be sitting?

I would sit roughly 9ft away from my wall. I have actually had a HD70 in my room, but I am not sure if I want to have that in my room or the westy LCD. Reason being, It has to be somewhat dark for that projector.

I use my computer ALOT during the day and thats why I would be leaning towards the LCD instead of the projector.

I love my (480p) projector, but wouldn't recommend it as a daily television set. But to play the occasional game or watch a movie, it's a vastly superior experience (IMHO) to any television I've seen.

I have the 1080i (720p) Westy that I got for $999 before Christmas.

I love it, other than the single HDMI input, ****** speakers, no tuner and crappy menus.

But hey, what do you expect for a $1000 42" LCD. The picture is great.

$350 shipped on EBAY.

EVGA 8800 GTS, retail box new. Not the superclocked.

Seemed to be a good price.

9 feet is pretty far for a 37" screen, especially for computer use.

Did I understand that this is a replacement for your 22", or would this just be for games / video when you use your computer as the source?
