Which would be better for gaming? SB i3 3.4Ghz, or G3258?

Just curious. We all know that the Haswell i3 is better than the G3258 for most gaming purposes, but what about Sandy Bridge? I also read that, with Haswell, HyperThreading was greatly improved, and that in SB, it wasn't that much of an improvement.

Hyperthreading was improved with Haswell, but I'd bet that overall the SB i3 will be superior. It'll lose where it doesn't matter, and win where it does.

it really depends on the game specifically and how high you overclock the g3258... for most games I think a 4.2GHz g3258 should beat the i3 2130, but for some the i3 will be better and have more consistent frame times/mins, and you will avoid bugs like Far Cry 4 not starting with less than 4 threads until it was patched...

What games are you trying to play and at what resolution and with what graphics card?

Truthfully, can't quite say.

I've got two G3258 rigs with 7950 cards, and then I have a BNIB pre-built with the SB i3 @ 3.4Ghz. I could throw in a 7750 card, or upgrade the PSU, and throw in a better (to be purchased) card.

Just kind of musing which one I should try to pawn off on a friend, who mentioned getting a gaming PC for his daughter (from me, in like Nov).

well, specially for someone with no experience with OC I think the i3 is a safer choice,

It's cases like these that make me favor the i3:

Yeah, that Anantech review of the G3258 really showed just how hobbled the chip was vs. the i3, clock speed or no clock speed.

Pentium is already dead for gaming. AAA games will not support dual core dual threaded games anymore. So any i3 is better than g3258.

If you're offloading it on a friend's daughter, definitely the i3. Don't sell overclocked systems to people who don't know what they're doing with them! Sandy i3, 8GB memory and a 7950 sounds like a great system.
