Which Windows XP??

I already have windows 98. I plan to switch to win XP. I also want to buy a HD only for my systems, so I can easily clean install a often as I want. If I buy the upgrade instead of the full version, will I always have to first install win 98 so I can reinstall win XP? Can I simply format my HD and reinstall the upgrade? Does upgrading for win 98 to winXP offer a lesser performance than clean installing win XP alone??? Thanks!

You don't have to install Win98 first. During the XP setup routine, you will have to prove that you own a qualifying product to upgrade from by inserting the CD when asked.

Many people have reported having no problems doing an upgrade but I always recommend a fresh install.

bozo1 is correct, you don't have to install Win98 before installing the upgrade. When you install WinXP Upgrade on a blank HD, it will ask you to place your Win98 CD in your drive to prove you have the legit use for the install. I too suggest a fresh install as you will tend to have less clutter on your HD and less of a chance of running into error messages, hope this helps 🙂

Why go with the full version. Go to newegg and buy Windows XP Pro OEM with a cheap peice of hardware (like a mouse.)

Also the OEM XP Pro is cheapter than the Pro Upgrade.
