With that high of system specs, you pretty much have to run either Vista64 or XP64 =P

I'd say that in most cases, 2GB and dual cores could and probably should be running Vista (32).

I'm shocked. Despite the anti-Vista threads, nearly 2/3 of those responding to this poll are running Vista.

2/3rds of 3 is 2 :p
*useless info* ... completely useless ... 70 geeks voting on a tech forum - and it's 3 : 2 ... 60% are running Vista and how many dual boot like i do?

I like Vista x64 SP1 better than XP, but my hardware gets much better game performance on XP SP3, so that's what I'm running right now.

My Vista will be gathering dust until I upgrade my hardware. :(

That number is actually better than the estimate I have been reading these days. In year one Vista sold 100 million copies and there are 1 Billion PCs total. so that number would be around 10%. for comparison, XP sold 24 million copies in it's first year when there were about 250 million PCs. Just shy of 10%.

A trend that I have been noticing more lately are that tech savy users are now begining to opt for 64bit more and more. Hopefully that will get things moving more in that direction.

ah - your poll did not allow for multiple systems. I have two with Vista and two with XP Pro. I use XP Pro on my main system, and Vista on my laptop when travelling.

My newly installed systems = Vista.

X2-4400 / 3GB = Vista Business 32 dual booted with LINUX.

Q6600 / 8GB = Vista Home Premium 64 dual-booted with LINUX.

XP still runs on my P4 laptop.

XP, NT, DOS, whatever still get run in VMs whenever I'm running LINUX and need to do something besides games / printing that I can't easily do without using windows for.

XP still runs in a lot of ways better than Vista, though Vista is bloated / slow / buggy it's sort of more tolerable since at least the PCs I have vista on are at least 2x as powerful as the ones I commonly used XP on.

Running lots of different OSs but I voted Vista since I use Vista 64 on my main box with 8 gig and a c2d @ 3.5. I keep Ubuntu and XP running on VMs most of the time and still this box runs smooth as silk and never crashes. Also Vista home on my laptop with 2 gig RAM. No complaints with either.

See no practical evidence of supposed Vista slowness (except for file transfers which do seem kind of slow) and aside from the HD space the supposed bloat seems like a no-factor. Not sure what it would be like on a slow machine. I'll keep XP for those and for the few things Vista 64 still won't run.

I'm saving my money to build a Ferrari of a rig when I graduate (2010). Already got about $1000 stashed away. Besides, that's when AMD's Bulldozer is supposed to come out, along with a lot of other stuff. Should be an interesting year.

I'll upgrade to Vista then.

My machine = x64 Vista Business
Laptop = XP Pro
Work Laptop = XP Pro
Wifes computer = XP Pro
Filer Server\AD controller == 2003 Standard

I do own a copy of Vista premium Home, Wifey's comp was a little sluggish and all the crap they loads on it made it rather slow. So i put XP back on her machine.

I am taking part in a marketing promotion from MS and should have Vista Ultimate by sometime in April. I am also waiting on a microsoft event on April 1st for a copy of Server 08. Though I heard it is only a RTM version that has a 1 year license period :mad:

nonsense

look at Steam change ... the percentages don't change from week-to-week except in the very smallest of increments
--in contrast, this silly survey changes the percentage a LOT more with each vote

... one more time ... find me a better one if you can :p

STEAM survey is only a small percentage of the total gamers world wide,as to finding a better one well I have better things to do with my time like playing DS ;) ,as I have already stated ALL SURVEYS are not that accurate,if you want to believe in a particular survey then thats up to you,I take them all with a pinch of salt as they say.

Vista x64 currently and this same system has an x64 XP Pro image too. I'm on the fence with Vista still but getting used to it. Perhaps 2008 Server would be better to run? :laugh:

let me try once more

Steam is not "a small percentage of the total *PC* gamers world wide" ... unless you count 3rd world countries with no Internet access and pre-'03 games running on their rigs

it is a LOT more representative - in the order of 10,000 times more accurate - than this *silly survey* of less than 100 'elitist' HW geeks. :p

maybe you should be playing games right now instead of wasting your time with silly criticism of a really 'representative' survey of PC gamers. Perhaps you can simply 'dismiss' 1.3 million gamers as completely worthless, but most reasonable people won't.
otoh, THIS tiny poll is worse than useless.

I did the survey in my office.

The OS on all the corporate machines is XP pro.

1 person is running Vista that came with his Dell laptop. He disabled Superfetch, said it was slowing him down. (?!?)

The rest doesn't know or care...

i think you did, Mem :p
- try coming up with something logical in reply instead of dismissing a survey of 1.3 million gamers - out of hand - based on your own personal feelings about it because it may disagree with your elitist world view
:confused:
