Which Wii Game do I HAVE to have?

A few friends of mine from college got my new wife and I a Wii as a wedding gift. I mostly play my Xbox360 and like shooters and sports games. I enjoy the "party" style games on the Wii, but I don't really follow what is out there for a Wii as closely.

So what Wii game (or games, 2 or 3) are must-haves?

Wii Sports that comes w/ the console will give you hours of fun. Mario Kart Wii is a must get, although it's out of stock at retail stores. Boom Blox is a great party game. If you like shooters, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is pretty damn good. When you buy Wii Play for the extra controller, you also get a disc w/ a bunch of games as well.

Here is a nice, well rounded list of games.

  • Mario Galaxy - Amazing platformer and a true sequel to N64.
Metroid Prime 3 - A really solid FPS shooter with some platforming and adventure elements thrown in--really really great game. The controls are perfect.
Boom Blox - Great and simple puzzle for family gatherings (including kids)--seriously.
Okami - A beautiful, au von guard, "zeldia-ish" adventure game where you play a wolf. Might not be for everyone.
Resident Evil 4 - If you've not already played the GC version. It's a fairly solid survival horror game with a weak middle.
Zelda: Twighlight Princess - I've not finished it, so this is coming from the critics, but apparently it's amazing.
No More Heros - an amazingly, rediculously fun game! One of my favorite (and most underated games) of last year on any console. It's a story about this guy who buys a lightsaber type weapon on ebay and tries to become the #1 assassin in order to get in this girls pants (whom he met in a bar). You work your way through 10 assassins and its just crazy-insane. If you ever played God Hand and enjoy it then you must give want to give this a shot. It's probably not for everyone (warning to gfx whores--the visual fidelity isnt not great!), but the gameplay, crazy antics of the protagonist, witty dialog, raw action and the overall uniqueness of the title--just makes it worth it.
Mario Kart Wii - ...I guess. I mean, it's Mario Kart, right? I havent played since I beat it in the first week.

Awesome list. Going to the store tonight I guess :)

I just bought a wiimote and nunchuck since I think we only get one from our friends (going to get the Wii tonight). Was there some pack I should have bought instead?

Thanks.

A Wii that had Mario Kart Wii permanently locked in the drive would still be worth 249$

(besides, I could still play zelda:a link to the past on VC)

edit: okami is boring and the graphics suck. I know its unfair to compare a wii game to any other next gen title, but given that it's such a visually stylized game, it really would have benefited from being on superior hardware. As it is now, it's a blurry mess with a limited draw distance and very little action. The graphics of the Wii don't deliver enough of the visual style to carry the game. The wii-mote drawing gimmick is about the only thing I'd say the game had going for it.

Mario Galaxy is great, with lots of playtime to put in it if you're interested in mastering it and getting all of the stars.

I stand by mario kart as the best game for the system.

Yeah, that's a really popular title. I reason I didnt mention it is because I find it really tedious and obnoxious to play.

Dont forget that you really need a different controller to play it as well.

Mario Kart is great because you can play it online. I play with my nephew quite a bit.
My wife and I really enjoy Rockband
Raving Rabbids II is just crazy but it is fun... Pretty basic play...
Wii Fit is pretty cool too, but it isn't something that you play with people. You can learn yoga and strength training on it.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympics is good too.

I think that Metroid and No More Heroes are my first purchases. It seems like No More Heroes is about $20-$30 on ebay...does that sound about right (cant access retail game sites at work).

Well I would have busted this out earlier, before Modeps said anything, but I didn't read this thread in time... :(
