I'm installing an ax7 + enermax variable fan
on my athlon 1.4 tbird.

Question: Should the fan be pointing down (into the heat sink) or
up, (away from the heat sink) ?

I've gotten both responses... so i'm not quite sure which.
I'll test it if need be, but i'd rather get it right the first time.

The fan is manually variable. Has a little screw thing to adjust the rpm's.

I figure, i'll crank it up just loud enough to keep it cool, but no more.

The rest of my case is comprised of strictly panaflo l1a's.

quick question: how much would it help to add one more 80mm exhaust fan?

I have:
1 - intake 80mm panaflo
1 - power supply exhaust 80mm panaflo
1 - enermax variable speed fan for the cpu w/ ax7

the extra hole is just below the power supply, fairly near the cpu.
should i add another l1a, or is it not worth it?

exhaust is better...so yeah add one other than the PSU which doesnt do much to cool your case anyway.

It depends on a lot of things including the specific heat sink you are using, the type of case you are using and how the case fans are located, and whether the case fans are exhausting or ventilating near the CPU. The type of power supply you are using and if it has bottom vent like most Enermax's do can also determine if the CPU fan should blow or suck. Ideally you want all of them working together and not fighting each other, to produce the greatest air flow through the case and the CPU heat sink.
