Which way is the ball going?

forward or back?

Can't really tell if this pic is after Ortiz has hit the ball or before ... first instinct says after because his wrists are already broke, but he did pull the ball (this is from today's game) so common sense says he was ahead of the ball.

Any thoughts?

How do you know the ball is going up? It could just as well be coming down

It's after he has hit the ball! You can tell by the way he's positioned that he has swung and hit the ball.

the pitch would have had to have been a breaking ball that looked to be head high to come down @ that angle.

bingo, the ball is moving towards the batter, you can tell because of the "ghosting" effect. Regardless of the ball's angle or the batter's hands the ghosting effect does not lie. And judging by his hands, the pitch was a curveball or some other offspeed pitch that fooled him.
