The natural tendency is to turn in the opposite direction. Wrong. You turn the wheel in the same direction.

Its simple: if you're in, say, a real wheel drive car around a left corner and you are oversteering (ie, the rear starts kicking out making it look like you are in fact turning to the left too hard) you turn the wheel to the right to correct. There is no debate or opinion on it. One way is the wrong way and one way is the way I just said ;)

You turn IN to the spin. So if your rear is drifting to the right and your nose is pointing to the left, you would turn right to straighten out the car, which is called turning into it.

going at 90 mph, my minivan went into a 720 on the freeway one time... the van was spinning counterclockwise, i turned the wheel clockwise, and i ended up on the shoulder with no scratches to me or the car. i dunno what i was supposed to do though.

this sounds like the opposite of tate's post...

You were supposed to not take a corner at 90. Actually at 150 km/hour (about the same speed) in a nissan access I was drifting across lanes before cause I was going too fast on the highway. Oh to be stupid as hell and 16.

It's easier to regain control if your turning into the slide.
Imagine sliding on your feet across ice. Wouldn't it be easier to keep control if your feet were pointing in the direction you were going?

Best analogy I can think of right now.

Why would you the same direction as the spin? So instead of doing a 360 you turn it into a 720 finishing it off with tripple axel and landing on your head?

I am far to stupid to understand in vs. out (to me what alienwho said was turning out of the turn) - but what i know for sure is that myself an alienwho said how to do it! If you're taking a left corner and the rear kicks out with the nose now pointing even more leftwards you turn to the right to counteract that. Turning left will simply exagerate the skid.

Heh yeah what skoorb said. I was always tought that doing that was called turning into the turn. Whatever it's called, we mean the same thing.

Because it straightens out the car, thus you regain control and don't freaking die. ;)

Basically its like this:

Go download a rally video from the net. Alternatively go watch some road racing of cars with rear wheel drive in the right conditions (like the small tight tracks where they get BMW's racing).

1) You are approaching a left corner and turn the wheel left. Oops, you have too much gas and suddenly your tail end is spinning. This is called oversteer because it now looks like you over turned the wheel too far to the left. To correct it you turn the wheel now to the right (and also reduce throttle).

2) If approaching a corner that goes to the right and you oversteer, thus causing the tail to kick out too far and your nose to point too far to the right you turn the wheel left. Yes, you're taking a right hand corner but in this case you have to correct for oversteer; your car is already pointing too much to the right because of this and so you correct by turning the wheel left (even though you are taking a right corner).

Trust me. I grew up driving in SNOW and ICE. You turn into it. For several reasons. And I think they have been explained as well as they can be. See my earlier post! Or go to an ice rink and try it yourself! :)

<< I DID! >>

not for me, sliding sideways feels like a snowboard and allows me to control myself easier.
