I've had vonage for a long time but I'm hating the fact that their tech support people no longer speak English. I need to make a change.

Can anyone recommend a good voip service? I need something reasonably priced as well, because I'll be needing two phone and one fax line.

Packet8. $20 a month, never needed to call customer support because I've never had a problem. I've used them for about a year and half.

You can get bundled deals that are pretty well priced, and integrate into cell services as well.

TW doesn't have cable internet access available in my area; I'm using Cablevision for internet and am happy with it. I use DTV for TV and Cingular for cell service. I generally dislike TW (nasty, big company kind of thing), but what can they offer me?

Ah, if they dont have the cable in your area you probably couldnt get the package deals. In my area I can get HD cable, phone and internet (5 mbs) for like 100 bucks a month. They will also be working to include cell service into the packages, although I dont think thats a big rollout yet and as far as I know is still in a testing phase. I know the VOIP has mind blowing capacity though for calls completed per hour (Not that that would particularly interest you, but a network geek like myself...)
Also, I think they will be working to integrate the wireless into the home phone offering as well.

Defintely try sunrocket. they have a ton of promotions going on for like $199/year of service or $9.95/month limited minutes (there is also an international deal). I've had it for a while and it has been really good. My tech support has also been fantastic and in english.

Sunrocket and packet8 guys, can you send and receive faxes on the standard line or do you have to pay for additional service? I am going to get VoIP in the near future and that is something I am interested in looking at. I know Vonage you have to get a fax line and AT&T lets you do it on the regular line.

Check out the VoIP forums on DSLReports. I use Nuvio and I've been very pleased. Prompt technical support that's based in America. I pay $15/month for one line, 500 minutes, plus $5 each for two virtual numbers. The voice quality is similar to Vonage. The reason I left Vonage was that they promised me a local number, but after 18 months, could deliver. Nuvio has tons of area codes and cities, including some really obscure ones.

Ok I looked over the details and you can typically send and receive faxes on Sunrocket. It looks like their annual plan is a really hot deal with good ratings and similar feature sets as the other major providers. In addition, they only allow service if they can provide 911 service which is a big plus if you ever need 911.

sunrocket, $199 for the year, cheapest and best

it is even better deal, you can get 15 months for $199

i use sunrocket

Does that include taxes and fees? Becuase Vonage advertises $25 a month but by the time you add in taxes and fees it is about $35 so it is only $10 cheaper than my traditional phone.

Just signed up for sunrocket @ $199/yr.

Here's how vonage worked out for me: 2 lines @ ~$29/mo = 696/yr

With sunrocket I'll get two numbers included in that $199 deal and can add additional numbers for $3/mo. Works for me. Thanks a bunch, guys.

Sunrocket won't give me service in Atlanta despite showing it on their map. :(

I use AT&T broadvoice

customer service is fine, and service is fine. I have some stuttering while I am talking and my son is D/L stuff at the same time. I blame comcast for this with the wimpy upload bandwidth.

SunRocket does support faxes, and is very successful from what I hear, though I don't fax at all.

SunRocket doesn't add on any weird taxes or anything, if you sign up for $199, they charge you $199.

Try calling up Customer Service for service in Atlanta. They can give you the definitive answer about service because sometimes they are limited with in an area code to certain prefixes that you may not know offhand. Good luck.

that is odd, i have my 2nd "signature" line in an atanta area code

you can actually use any number anywhere, the only feature you miss is the 911 stuff
the sunrocket site said where i live service was unavailable, so i just put in the closest city and have a number for there

I spoke with the customer service and apparently some of Atlanta is owned by Bell South and they don't have a deal with Bell South while other parts are owned by other companies that they do have deals with. Oh well. Hopefully they will make a deal with Bell South soon. For now, I signed up with AT&T.

Edit: Do you think I could sign up for another area of Atlanta for my home and not have a problem since those work? I don't really care about 911. If I have an emergency and I didn't have VoIP, I would have used my cell anyways. I can always cancel AT&T in the trial and return the box to Best Buy.
