Which Visiontek GF3 Ti200?

The question:

Out of 2 Visiontek GF3 Ti200's, The one with the blue sinks (chipset heatsink held on by pins) or the one with the gold ones (with the "nvidia" logo on the chipset fan, chipset heatsink glued on), which would you choose for better stability/overclocking?

Thanks again :)

old question

My system:

TBird 800 @ 980 (140x7)
Epox 8kha+
256mb DDR
Radeon 7200 64mb DDR (currently)

I have to run GTA3 in 640x480@16bit otherwise it's too slow for my liking, and Max Payne at 800x600@16bit.
Both games net me an average framerate of ~50fps.

What kind of speed/resolution could I expect from the GF3 Ti200?

<edit>
For a few bucks more, would be better off with either: Radeon 9000 Pro 64mb DDR or a Radeon 8500 64mb DDR or 8500LE 128mb?
</edit>

Thanks for the help :)

The Geforce 3 Ti 200 is your best choice.

I wouldn't even consider the Radeon 9000. It's an ok card, however, just like the Geforce 4 MX series it doesn't come close to the performance of a Geforce 3 Ti.

The real question is if you should get a Radeon 8500 or a Geforce 3 Ti 200.

Geforce 3 Ti is better.

-cheaper
-equal performance and even a bit better at times
-no driver issues. Especially in its early days the Radeon 8500 had huge problems. A lot of it got fixed, some still remains.

However, I think the card of your dreams is the Geforce 4 Ti 4200 for $160. Beats the performance of a Geforce 3 Ti by a whole bunch for only $30 more. Good luck.

My Gainward GF3 Ti200 can handle UT2003 and BF1942 without any problem at 1024x768x32 on an Athlon 1600 XP. However I kind of wish I had just payed the little extra for the GF4 Ti200. It really is the best bang for the buck right now.

Thanks a bunch for the input.
I've had very few problems with my 7200's drivers, but then again, 7200 != 8500 :)

Here's the only catch-22 regarding GF3 vs. GF4.
My store only carries the GF3, and I have $40 store credit I would like to use up....
We sell them for $130, and a GF4 Ti4200 would cost me $225..... quite a big difference... a difference that I can't afford :(

So GF3 Ti200 it is, thanks :)

That's just what I wanted to hear :)
I guessing I could run GTA3 @ 800x600@32bit super smooth? :D

I think GTA3 would run great @800x600x32 with a Ti200 and your system. I ran it at 1024x768x16 with my P3 700@933 and barely ever noticed a slowdown.

Upgrading your RAM to 512mb should also help quite a bit, especially if you plan on playing BF1942. I have not played it yet, but from what I have read, its a memory hog.

Even better news :)

I noticed in win2k, GTA3 needed ~320mb's or so.... ram is definetely my next upgrade :)
I can either get another 128 and plug up all my slots, or trade my 2 128's for a 256 and then grab another 256.
I think I'll go the 512 method

And after that, new PS, and a new processor, and then it'll be time for a new soundcard, and then a new mobo ;)

Hehe, oh well, I figure I might as well spend the extra cash while I still have it :D ;)

Visiontek GF3 Ti200 experts!!!!!!

Which is a better choice (mainly for overclocking/stability), the Visiontek GF3 Ti200 with the blue chipset/ram sinks, or the one with the gold chipset/ram sinks?
I just found out we have both, so LMK which one to buy :D

All I know is the Gainward is an overclocking beast, unlike my Ti200 :D :D :D

My VT Ti200 with the blue sinks ran like a champ for almost a year at 245/500, just sold it to a coworker and got a 4200.

Sounds good :)
I'll probably go with it since the heatsink is easily removeable..... I'll probably end up slapping a huge passive heatsink on it to quieten my computer even more.
Dont worry, I've got a big 120mm fan in the bottom front of my case so it'll keep the video card plenty cool :)
I might even use my old alpha pfh6035 as a sink.

I doubt that there is a huge difference between the two. If you are going to be replacing the HSF with a passive heatsink, go with whichever will be easier for the mod, which you already said is the blue one. Or, splurge for the Radeon 9700
