I'm holding out with my R480 just long enough to aquire one of these or an X1800 crossfire, whichever makes more sense in the next few months.

To my shame, however, this means postponing COD2, FEAR, and Quake4 because i don't believe in selling myself short on the first run through any game :)

I don't understand. A single GTX 512mb is faster than a X1800 XT 512MB, but an X1800 crossfire is faster than a couple of GTX 512mb SLI?

im sorry, im not seeing these benchmarks where the 512 GTX is lined up against X18. links? im actually curious...

So if you are going to spend same amount, get 2 7800GTs instead.
Otherwise get 2x7800GTX 256mb or 2x 7800GTX 512mb. For a single card setup, get 7800GTX 256mb, but getting 1 512mb 7800GTX makes no sense to me.

I'd go with dual opteron 175 OEM. It costs $30 less than the 4400s you want to get. Keep the same heatsink from FX55 (xp-90). I'd personally keep the 1 gig of ram you have and get 1 extra gig. Replacing your perfectly fine ram with 2 gigs of value VX just to have 2-2-2-5 timings for 5% speed boost (if that?) is probably not worth it. If you want to throw away $100 extra to replace your 1 gig of ram you have, might as well get a faster videocard or step up to a faster dual core. That's my opinion.

Also sell off your FX55 and the mobo. I am sure someone will buy FX55 for $300. So your upgrade to dual-core shouldnt' be expensive. I realize that you have some money so you dont even care, but it's a matter of principle, why throw money away?

the problem with my ram is that it will not go past 250 fsb 1:1. and the vx does at low latencies while mine does not. I have try 2 different sets of this memory and none will past the same. Im starting to think it could be my mb cause now it will not pass 215 fsb 1:1 but i run memtest for windows for about 2 hrs and no errors whatsoever, but it will not over clock anymore. Also my cpu temps are reading really high idle 50c while before that would be max while overclocked at load.
As far as the brand name for the 7800 gt ? any reccomendations Is there a real benefit of sli at anything less than 1600 x 1200 ? does it justify the extra $$$. also im reading about the xfx gt that is overclocked.

please advise

If money is NOT an issue...

Buy them all, try them out... keep your favorite one... or keep them all... since you're rollin'

To help out the struggling ATI?

Do you want them to fail? Or do you think they have enough money to fall back on and get their act together by the next round? I'm just curious because I get mixed signals. I know you are intelligent enough to realize that if ATI fails your beloved NVidia will help stagnate a market that has been seeing awesome gains lately due to competition. Seriously though, at this point in time, if money is no object, SLI 512mb GTXs are the only solution to be on top...

why the hate, some of us do have an excellent job and from time to time can upgrade to a newer parts. The reason that I wrote no money factor was to avoid you will get a better bang for you buc going with the 6800 ultras or something like that. Most of my curent part will be sold right after new upgrade.

This shows your maturity and technical expertise.

2x Nvidia Geforce 7800GTX 512MB by far.

mod at DFI into an SLI (if you still can somehow) and you're perfectly set.

7800GT/GTX, X1800XT/XL, 7800GT SLI Benches

SLI COD2 performance

You can look at these benches and decide. In terms of value for the money it seems 7800GT on the high-end is a very good card. The only reason why I recommended you get 2x7800GT SLI is because they will most likely be faster than 1 7800GTX 512mb card which costs the same. However, with that in mind, I still do not think that is money well spent. But I suppose if I had some money, I'd get 2 mid-high (from ultra cards) SLI cards. Going with 2x 7800GTX 512 is about $1400. The 7800GT SLI is $700 or less option. You could then easily sell the GT cards for say $150 each losing $400 in 1 year. I just don't see how 2x 7800GTs wont be sufficient enough, maybe in extreme settings in FEAR and COD2. And 2x7800GTXs dont seem to net much more gains, yet they cost an extra $100 more per card.

Then again R580 and nvidia's next card will come in 8-10 months, so dropping $1400 on 2x512mb 7800GTX is short lived e-penis fame. Of course you could wait forever using this logic. My main point is you can overbuy and get the best, but unless you are playing at resolutions far above 1600x1200, you might be paying for frames you wont feel (like going from 60 to 80 to 100 etc.)

As for the brand name, I'd say EVGA or BFG OC ones are good. I'd go with ones that are cheapest since they are basically all made using Nvidia's reference design (or you could decide on what games and other things are in the bundle). You could also choose them based on stock overclock. Of course if you have so much money that you feel no difference between $700 and $1400 (1 day of work), then by all means get 2x 512mb GTXs.

Ya take those COD2 numbers then Add about 20 to 40 FPS top of that, then change all the TEXTURES set to EXTRA and add Multisampling and Gamma AA, thats what im running with 2 XFX 7800GTX 512 meg cards in SLI. So i dont see where ATI is gonna fit in unless they get there XFIRE mobos out, which i wish they would i hate it when there is no competition.

can you read? my prevous post?
if not posting something that could help to make my purchase why post, just cause you live in a trailer and do not have a job or can not afford anything more than what your uncle gave you for your birthday, does not mean we are all in the same situation, what a joke.

Hmm..I'd say wait until Q1 of '06 and see what will happen. :D but for now a X1800XT would suit you nice.

You come in here asking for the fastest video card (when judging by the computer you have now), you already know a thing or two about building a rig. At this point today, you should know beyond a doubt what that card is. This is as clear cut as when the ATi 9700 Pro came out or the NVIDIA 7800GTX came out earlier this year.

No need to insult that poster even if he made a sarcastic remark. You have to expect that once in awhile when you post a question like this (check out every "Whats the best CPU, GPU, Monitor I can buy if money is no object" thread - as of today I'll bet they're all answered FX-57/X2 4800+, 7800GTX 512MB, Apple 30" by and large - and each one has its share of people replying with ':cookie:' and "why don't you just burn $500 and spend the rest on [insert hardware]").

You may have a better job than that poster (but of course you presume that to be certain because of your remark), but you sure aren't acting like someone befitting that. Point is show some class - the people in this thread are for the most part trying to help you out.

Oh yeah this is more of a landslide than the '84 presidential election - get the 7800 GTX 512 single card. Although the Voodoo 5 6000 answer and how it accumlates in value was clever :p.
