Which version of windows 7 for gaming

I have an e-8400 system with xp and I'm figuring in another 6 or 12 months I will have to upgrade it. This system is used for gaming only (I use a linux system for everything else).

I'm a bit concern that my sound card will not work under windows 7 (it is an creative lab xfi (Ithink exterme music - wasn't that the 'good' one ? since it is listed as not compatible with vista).

I guess 32bit vs 64 bit doesn't matter much since both versions are included.

Btw Im actually quite happy with windows xp for gaming so not 100% sure why I am considering an upgrade.

Does it work under both 64 bit and 32 bit? Do you miss xp? Does pro and ultimate provide anything useful? It seems like a lot of folks are going for the more expensive version (for gaming) and I'm trying to decide if it is because of marketing or if there is a legit reason. From the listed difference on ms website it sounds like encryption and xp in a vm are the only additions.

I don't know for sure but I would hope it would otherwise Creative is really really falling behind.

I don't miss XP...haven't missed it since I installed Vista.

Pro provides XP mode and the ability to run your computer as a remote host for remote desktop. Those are the features I find most useful but they really don't have much to do with gaming.

I only had the 64-bit RC installed and the XFi worked great, but IIRC they listed 32-bit drivers also.

3 really big differences that Pro adds is the ability to join a domain, the ability to remote desktop into your PC and the XP VM you mentioned. If you need any of those 3 things then you have to go Pro.

There are times I miss XP, mostly just when trying to run older programs and games is all. For newer stuff Win7 works pretty good actually.

Edit: As far as the XP VM, I don't know that would handle games well. I have yet to see a VM run games, but then again I don't look much for it.

You2,

Dude....Win7 RC1 has been out for several months now. You haven't "tried" it at all?

Just buy Windows 7 and use the 64bit and be done with it.

Not at all.

Specifically, XP mode is a virtualized version of XP running within W7. It was added to encourage businesses to transition their XP desktops to W7 and still maintain compatibility with apps that do not run under W7. It will not provide you with 3D acceleration or other features that would be required for gaming.

I would have to reinstall my machine to try it and then I would have to reinstall all my games (and saved games). I don't have a spare computer sitting aruond to try it. Next time i upgrade the machine I will stick in a couple of ssd and 1tb drive so i have spare partitions for trying things (currently i ahve very little free space as it is). I updated the mb/graphics cards a year ago (e-8400/8800gts) and I'll probablyg et a 5850 if there is a good price on black friday; but I didn't upgrade the drives to avoid reinstall (had to reinstall anyways becuase the old box was amd but then I didn't want to wait for new disks 🙁 ). Anyways in a bit i will have to reinstall anyways to add disk space (guess i might be able to add a 3rd drive without reinstalling anways i still have 20gb left for a few games).
