Use notepad to edit C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts or c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts on a Windows system. Add the
127.0.0.1 ads.web.aol.com
127.0.0.1 ar.atwola.com
lines to the bottom of the file. Save and close.
On Solaris the hosts file is on /etc/hosts
I'm not sure if it is in the same place on other UNIX distributions.
Essentially what it does is it resolves site names to the ip specified instead of going out to the domain name server for name resolution. So when AOL tries to resolve its ad server name, it gets directed to the local machine, and cannot get a response, so the ads go away. It still chews up CPU clock cycles.
