is there a command in *NIX to tell the user which OS and version they're running?
i know in win2k it's 'winver'

thanks n0cmonkey! boy...seems you've been helping me all day! thanks man

anyways, remember i was asking about slackware earlier? well, then i thought about solaris.
you think it's worth running it? also, does solaris use kernels like all *NIX system? i mean,
would i have to worry about downloading the latest kernel like i would for linux?
same goes to bsd.

thanks a million guy!

Solaris would be worth learning, but it seems to be a little tougher for a lot of people. You wouldnt have to download the latest kernel, chances are it would be patched in a patch or you would get a new version of the OS. Same goes with FreeBSD. MAKE SURE YOU PATCH EVERYTHING.
