my bro has a 5900 flashed to 5950 but his CPU is only a P4 1.6 with a gigabyte mobo (533)

should he: get a 3.06 and be done with it or get an nforce II + mobile barton CPU?

the only problem with the latter is that he only has crucial pc2700 ram....

looking to spend $150-200, the less the better

either way memory would be holding you back...
though it seems like a 533 mobo wouldn't support a 3.06 very well (personal opinion, i don't know your board or P4s)

personal opinion: nforce II and Barton

ps: why mobile? especially if you're trying to save money

I say grab a 3.06 for now and spend more money on an upgrade after BTX, PCI Express, and the new AMD/Intel CPU's/Chipsets come out.

jdogg, the thing is that the 3.06 costs about the same as the mobile CPU + mobo combo so $$$ isnt the deciding factor

In that case, for ease (no reformatting) get the P4, otherwise go for the Athlon and OC it. There's always upping the multiplier.

If it costs the same, just go with the NFII + Mobile CPU. They have a 266MHZ FSB, so you can overclock the FSB up to 333MHZ for your memory and then start cranking the multiplier. I thought you may have a sweet deal on the 3.06GHZ, but if not, go for the combo, it will give him a good bit better performance over the P4.

I recently had to make this decision... P4-3.06 versus an AMD cpu and a new motherboard for roughly the same cash. Also had 512mb of DDR333 on one stick.

I went with the new P4-3.06.. I installed it yesterday and am very pleased with my choice. I didn't want to get into replacing the RAM too, etc, re-installing windows, etc. I think this 3.06 should last me for at least another year. Plus, I like the P4 Northwood.. I think it's the best cpu out there short of a P4EE or a AMD FX-5x so this factored in too.

I agree.

The 3.06 can be overclocked to 3.5 easy.
