Which University of California is Best?

Actually, they're right. It really *does* depend on what you're trying to get into...

There's no real pre-med, pre-law, pre-pharmacy program here...so work that into your equation

And ranked by fields I would go:

Engineering/technlogy:

Berkeley, LA, San Diego, Irvine (and Cal Poly SLO)

Social Sciences:

Berkeley, LA, San Diego/Santa Barbara

Physical Sciences:

Berkeley, LA, San Diego, Davis

Business:

Berkeley

Partying:

Santa Cruz (and San Diego ST.)

And so forth.

<< All you guys are obviously forgetting UC San Francisco! >>

I figured he meant undergrad schools only SYRINGER, if that is in fact your real name.

UC San Franciso is mainly a Graduate institutiion. Not much undergraduate stuff there. Mainly graduate medecine and Law (UC Hastings)

I'm sorry... But you should also include ALL the UCs when ranking them...even if they aren't ONLY Undergraduate schools..

And you clearly know my name....

HAHAHA...obviously SF would be ranked last because it dones't contain an undergraduate program

EDIT: graduate to undergraduate

The best school is whichever one you feel the most comfortable at. I had the choice of attending Berkeley, UCLA or Santa Barbara. I ended up going to UCSB because I loved the campus and the town and just didn't feel comfortable at the other two schools.

Each UC has its own qualities and vices. Berkeley has a good reputation but rents are atrocious and its in the middle of a smallish city and I find it dirty, personally, but it is right across the bay from SF if you're into that scene. Berkeley actually truly shines in its graduate program, and its undergrad program is not quite on par with its excellent reputation. UCSB has some great parties on the Streets of Isla Vista, but it is affectionately known as HIV, due to the uncleanliness of the populace 😉 . UCSD i hear is nice but antisocial, no personal experience there. UCSC is full of weed-smokers and is not for the academic minded individual, as it seems to be the easiest UC to get into, and i believe that you can go there and not get a GPA (old rule?) I myself am a Davis man, a bit biased, i know. Davis is nice, fairly small, flat, easy to bike around... HOT AS HELL in the summer and cold in the winter, and not as many cows as you might think- only 1 barn full of em on one side of campus and you can only smell em at night when the wind blows the right direction.. 🙂. UC Irvine/Riverside; lots of asians....? To each his own.

we own,. depends what you consider "best". i've been up to berkeley, and well i can say for sure that everything looks better here. i'm sure if you want the best academic reputation go to berkeley but you can live in a trash hole. after being in college for a couple years, i seriously doubt the professors are really gonna make that much of a difference, i mean really how much worse can it be. i've already been led to the conclusion that most of the engineering professors just research and could care less about teaching. i am in compsci for ucla, and well i dont know how good it is on relative terms, since well this is the only college i've gone to, but i dont think my professors are well really all that great, maybe i just dont learn well with their style. i dont know.

No dirtier than LA, and the city is no smaller than Riverside/Santa Barbara and most other college towns.

They have some good programs there actually, and their 5-year MA Econ program is very intriguing to me. But you're right, they're known more for being a partying than academically. The environment is as good as it gets though, being right next to the beach and all. And if you head over to epinions.com, the people that went there give lots of credit to their professors and all.

<< UCSD i hear is nice but antisocial, no personal experience there >>

It's pretty close to San Diego St., which is one of the most social places out there.

<< we own,. depends what you consider "best" we got the best girls, and the best looking city. i'm sure if you want the best reputation go to berkeley but you can live in a trash hole. >>

It's the smog talking.

one of my friends goes to ucsc, and well they do get a quality education, just its a very laid back town, and if you want to do nothing you can. they dont allow no grades, i think class of 2004 was last class it was allowed with.

Have you visited UCLA? Across Sunset is Bel Air, a little further down is Brentwood. On the other side is the Whilshire corridor. These aren't expensive places because they are dirty.

LA as a city is rather large, there are certainly "dirty" areas (*cough*USC*cough* 😉 ), but West LA is very nice, and UCLA is sitting on some prime real estate.
