Is the x1 worth the premium?

My girlfriend and I have had both at one point and I would choose the X300. The X1 has no fan and because of this it runs fairly hot. The X300 uses a standard 2.5" 9mm laptop ATA HD, but the X1 uses a 1.8" HD so it would be much more expensive to replace if you had to.
The only pro the X1 has for me is that it's widescreen, but that's personal preference.

It might be a little heavier than you're looking for, but you can pick up a Latitude D410 from Dell Financial services (dfsdirectsales dot com) with warranty remaining through October/November 2008 for less than $450 shipped. Right now I see a one with a P-M 1.7, 80gig HD, 1024mb ram, and warranty through 10/21/2008. You can call during the week and they will tell you the warranty type if that makes a difference to you. If you're not in a huge rush to get one, check there periodically and they will update inventory as they get it in. I picked up an Inspiron 6000 with complete care accidental damage warranty through February 2010 for under $475 last week, you just have to check in every once in a while.

It depends on your priorities. I've owned both and also a D420, and currently own the X1, having sold the other two.

A big factor for me is quiet and light weight, and the X1 wins handily on both. Although both the X300 and the D420 worked well for me, I found the fans on both to be pretty noisy and not subject to control by software, while the X1 is fanless. Although it's warm, I don't find it hotter than the other two.

What convinced my to buy the X1 was the emergence of SSD's. I picked up the Samsung SSD from Newegg, and now I have a totally solid state and silent laptop. And it's quicker than the X300 or D420 in everyday work, because of it (despite having a slower CPU).

And it's about 1/2 pound lighter.

I have an X1. Love the fact that it has no fan because it's incredibly silent.
