Which type anethesia for Wisdom Teeth Removal?

I prefer to be completely under, and I was when I had 4 teeth removed before getting braces.
I don't want the chance of there being any memory of the event lingering in my mind. I was awake when I had a wart lasered off of my foot, and the smell of me burning was almost enough to make me pass out. Hell I get dizzy from just getting an innoculation shot. Hate needles, hate blood.

I picked the best day to have mine out. The day before thanksgiving (coming up). Most likely only local. I look forward to this.

Novocaine only, but he injected a buttload of it. I didn't feel much during the extraction, even when he had to drill into the jaw to bust out the impacted one. He ended up taking like 3 extra sets of x-rays while he was trying to get that one out to see what the heck he was doing. To the tell the truth, the one cavity he filled before doing the extractions hurt more. It was more painful imagining how much of the jaw he was having to drill into to get that tooth out.

Afterwards was a real bear, though. Waited too long after the novocaine wore off to start taking the vicodin, and I was in agony. The vicodin didn't start helping until the second dose. I should have listened to the guy when he said to start popping the pills as soon as I got home, even if I wasn't hurting.

Honestly, unless you have an impacted tooth, I don't think you really need general anesthesia. Well, maybe if you're getting a whole jaw full of teeth taken out, but an uncomplicated extraction probably wouldn't need more than the novocaine.

edit: total was 3 wisdom teeth extracted, with one (lower left jaw) impacted. The fourth one apparently decided not to show up for the party.

I had a local for mine, took about 40 minutes to get all four out. Fairly interesting procedure, although I wish I would have had a mirror so i could have actually seen what was going on. Pretty much no pain during recovery, a little bit of swelling which was annoying. The hydrocodone afterwards was fun though. 😀

Local only. It was actually kinda cool to hear/see the whole procedure. No regrets. Plus, with the extra money I saved I could buy lunch! Not that I could eat it for a month...🙁

I went with the IV sedation. I woke up very briefly as the surgeon pulled something out, but went right back to sleep. No complaints really. I had all 4 wisdom teeth taken out at once. Those pain killers rocked.

I was knocked out. I was telling the assistant about my college plans...next thing i knew i was trying to walk down a hallway almost falling over.

I got put under and I don't regret it. One moment the nurse is telling me "this may feel a little bit funny" after she puts the IV into my arm, the next moment I'm being escorted out the back exit and the procedure has already been done.

I was put under in the oral surgeons office. 40 min later he stops and sends me to the ER with an irregular EKG. had the rest done a week later in the hospital under the care of an anesthesiologist.

I had all 4 out with 2 badly impacted. The dentist said there was no way he'd want me awake for that, I didn't need much convincing so it was general all the way. I woke up and started talking to the nurse about Winnie the Pooh that was painted on the ceiling 😱

I had a local and had all four wisdom teeth pulled. I was at work around 9am and ate lunch that day...wasn't supposed to do either.

The worst part of it was not being able to feel my mouth and twice I had blood all in my keyboard.

I wasn't knocked out but they numbed the area completely where it felt like I had a cue ball stuck in my cheek. I heard the bone crunching and snapping... and saw... EVERYTHING!

Same here. Good times!

edit: the only people I know that were put under general for their wisdom teeth were women. 😉

curious - why are you guys so against being put under?

Unnecessary. Plain and simple. and ANY time you go under there's a chance you won't come back up. Not to mention $$ and I was interested in the procedure itself.

Then again when they cracked the lower right and the local wasn't 100% yet, and I nearly ripped the arm off the chair, being under may have been better 🙂 Needless to say the dentist jammed the needle in my gum damned quick and pumped A LOT of local in then.
