it sucks now that newegg.com has to charge tax to NYS residents. i was just about to make a purchase and realized that the tax no longer makes their (sometimes) lower price not so hot anymore.

anyway, which trusted online PC hardware stores do not charge tax in NYS???

just checked.. buy.com also charges tax for NYS residents..

Well, my alternative to Newegg is usually ZipZoomFly (Since I had good experiences back when they were GoogleGear) but I don't purchase from them too often.

I honestly don't know where else to go either now. :/

I thought ChiefValue was a subdivision of Newegg or something - don't they charge NYS tax too, now that Newegg does it?

MicroCenter and CompUSA have operation in NY so they charge tax too.

P.S. No point to get upset with the stores, it is Not their choice, it is a decision made by NYS tax dep. and it is Not going to be better.

I.e., in the near future we would see more of this.

I have had excellent luck with Zipzoomfly and also Mwave.

thanks for the lists guys,
i heard ewiz is under new management now (newbiiz?) and would like to give it some time before making large $50+ purchases from them

and no, i'm not getting mad at the store, but as a consumer, i will always purchase from safest/cheapest place... economics 101.

below is from Brian @ Ewiz:

hey guys, thanks for noticing the name change. we are still in heart ewiz. but we are working harder than ever to be greater than what we were before. we are working on the new site and working out the bugs to get shipping to the min. but for now, we want a slow transition from ewiz to newbiiz so that no one freaks out on what happened to ewiz. haha if any questions pm me or ill keep you guys posted.

Pretty soon ALL online transactions will be taxed by NYS. This was a law you can thank Eliot Spitzer for - even though he is gone.

You might as well shop locally and save the shipping.

Until then, most of us would rather go to the ones that have not begun charging it yet.
I still love Newegg, but as a customer, I'd like to get things as cheaply as possible. If you were buying something at a store and there was another store across the street that sold it for $10-15 less, would you buy it where you are for convenience, or would you cross the street for a better deal? We're just looking at all the choices available to us right now. An alternative is indeed to shop locally, but at least from the places I find in NYC, they're grossly overpriced.

yea as a learning economist, me as the consumer will always go for the best price(profit-maximizing) without taking big risks (risk-averse)

Unless there is a specific Good sale prices in NYC local vendors iare much Higher then NewEgg and the like even if you pay Tax.

The only Real computer store is MicroCenter in Westbury. Going there from the city is $10 Midtown Tunnel toll + $20 Gas.

I heard NCIX was the "Newegg of Cananda" (Don't remember where that quote came from.) However, when I looked up some reviews for their US counterpart - NCIXUS.com - back when the E8400 was a rarity, it had quite a load of bad reviews.. At least on ResellerRatings.
