here's a qestion- how many miles, and has the fluid ever been changed?

i would expect a '96 prizm to be pretty high mileage, and i might not risk it if you've never done it before.

those look to both be the same kit, and both have what looks like a paper gasket. i'd just buy the cheaper one.

The higher priced one is from BeckArnley, and they do not produce their items but buy from other and rebadge.

But just get the cheaper one as its a stock item and the Beck usually are not.

its got 153k on it, I got it at 136k. I don't know whats been done to it before but the fluid smells fine and the fluid has a slight brown reddish tent to it. I wasn't gonna do a flush just a drain and fill. I was just thinking of doing it before it got real bad and ive seen some bad ones. My sisters 93 Camry has 203k and the fluid has no redness to it. If you all think its a bad idea I may pass on it.

Also an FYI - I have had horrible luck with Advance parts, from sensors that read out of value when new to ball joints that don't fit to all kinds of other issues.

IMO:

Napa > Autozone > O'Reillys > Pep Boys > Advance

Napa > O'Reillys > Pep Boys > Advance > Autozone

fixed.

OP, a drain and fill will only change about half the fluid, so it will probably be a little safer.

the worry is that clean fluid that's not full of little microscopic bits of friction material may be too slippery and cause the worn bands and clutch packs to start slipping. it's not guaranteed, but i've seen enough high mileage trannys ruined by flushes to be wary.
