Brand loyal to Aquafresh. (But I buy it in bulk when on a major sale, so I don't save anything even if I wasn't brand loyal). Why Aquafresh? I'm ultrasensitive to toothpaste gagging. For some reason the vast majority of toothpaste tastes make me gag (and occassionaly vomit) while brushing. Trust me, it isn't a good experience. For some reason, the extra highly minty taste of Aquafresh was the only thing I could stomach as a child. I've gotten a bit better (and have tried many other brands for a brush or two), but still Aquafresh is the best at preventing my gag reflex from activating.

I am interested in the cinnamon flavor idea - maybe that'll also prevent the gag reflex. Haven't tried it yet.

Colgate, now. Usually, whatever is on sale for me. Wife needs the "sensitive teeth" stuff.

I understand limiting your flouride intake (it is poisonous to swallow in large quantities and turns your teeth yellow brown), but why avoid it completely? Just curious.

It's simply amazing how urban myths take hold, isn't it?

Geez, guys, use Colgate Total. Its proprietary ingredient pwns any other toothpaste, and the patent doesn't expire for a few more years.

Tooth decay is caused by sugar right?

I'm on atkins though, so i'm not conusming sugar, so I can just quit brushing my teeth, right?

Atkins is amazing. It helps you lose weight, clears up acne, saves on toilet paper, and toothpaste too!

I would love to know what's urban myth about this. Ever since I stopped using toothpaste containing SLS I haven't had any canker sores.

About the flouride, it isn't particularily harmful in the low doses, but if you do your research you'll see that many European and Asian countries have removed flouride from their waterstream because it does no good (no harm? can't be sure) once you've lost your first set of teeth.

I'll help you out with some quotes from the New England Journal of Medicine from 14 years ago:

European doctors still often prescribe fluoride to women with thin bones. High fluorine areas have a lower incidence of osteoporosis. By increasing fluorine intake, some elderly nursing home patients show a reduced excretion of calcium, improved bone density and alleviation of osteoporosis symptoms. One source speculates that hardening of the inner bone structure of the ear may prevent some hearing loss in the elderly. Although fluorine may thicken bones, the bones are not any stronger. The new bone is weaker. [New England Journal of Medicine, 32, #12, (1990):802-09]

SLS and SLES are soaps that create foam. There is an urban myth that these also cause cancer - thus you shouldn't use tootpaste or shampoo that contain them. Of course there is no evidence that SLS or SLES cause cancer, thus anytime someone posts this it is assumed you are conserned with this urban legend. I've never heard about a canker sore link. If you have any scientific evidence, I'd love to see it so I can learn.

Flouride is proven to eliminate small tooth cavities. Thus flouride is really useless with your first set of teeth - who cares if you have a cavity you'll lose the tooth shortly anyways. However your permanent teeth will hopefully be with you for life. You DON'T want cavities in these since it'll mean (a) lifelong pain or (b) you lose the tooth. Thus flouride is important once you get your permanent teeth. I think you have a lot of info screwed up in your post.

I see your edit. There is a big difference between having flouride on your teeth that you wash away and ingesting flouride (a poison). Thus your quote has nothing to do with toothpaste.

why pay $ for something you put in your mouth for 1-2 minutes and then spit out? might as well use dirt

toothpaste is 98% gypsum anyway, basically dirt

don't waste your money on expensive tp

Colgate Total is the only toothpaste proven to fight tartar for 12 hours after using.

It's impossible to brush your teeth with something without ingesting part of it into your system, albeit a small amount. It's in a small amount that it becomes harmful, any more than 1 part per thousand or million can't remember which offhand but it's in that link.

Flouride is present in all drinking water systems in the North America, as well as in many drinks particularily soft drinks.

SLS irritates skin, it's what is causing cankers in many people, and would be a strange coincidence that cankers subsided after I stopped using "regular" toothpaste (containing SLS).

If you can show me a recent article from a well established Scientific Journal disproving any of these facts I would take the time to read them,
Thanks
