Which one is better AMD Athlon or Pentium III?

Depends what motherboard you have and how much you want to spend. If you are building a new computer and don't have much money, I'd go with AMD. If you have more money to spend and want to have least trouble when building a computer, go with Intel.
If you got the cash, get INtel. If you want to save your money for other components, get an AMD. AMD's are a heck of a deal for the cost of their performance.
INTEL What's up with that answer? At least give him a reason why. He is new and he wants to learn. "AMD" does not help him a bit.

People will say don't go with the P3 because 1 GHz is the top you will be able to go with current motherboards, and don't go with the P4 because the current socket will be changed soon. Socket A (Athlon) will be around for a while, but no idea whether current motherboards will be able to support the future chips (i.e. change from 200 to 266 fsb).
Having owned a Slot A Athlon (oldie chips that they don't make any more) it gave me many headaches. Glad I got rid of it...never quite figured out what the incompatibilities or instability causing was.
I am now an owner of a P3 750 running rock solid at 930, and am very happy.

If you're building from scratch, go AMD. Costs less and performs better, how's that for a reason. As for the harder to set up part, it's just as easy to set up as an Intel system...
I'd also say AMD, it's cheaper then the P3, performs (arguably) a bit better at equivalent clock speeds, and your future upgrade path is MUCH better as your limited to 1GHz max with the P3.

I wouldn't worry too much about whether or not the Athlon4 can run on current KT133A mobos. From the recent computer expo in Hong Kong, it seems like they will run just so the mobos have the correct circuitry to detect Athlon4s (hence the previous concern about mobo companies sticking to guidelines). Also with the Taiwan show coming up we'll know more.

Athlon definitely. It's faster than a PIII 99% of the time and it costs less. Unless you already have a good socket 370 motherboard why would you want a PIII?

I would go with the P4, but if you havn't got the cash for that, go with AMD. P4 is a big invesment... with the RDRAM and motherboard... expensive stuff.
AMD SysMark proves that in apps (Photoshop, DV Editing, ect) a Athlon 1.33Ghz beats a P41.7Ghz overclocked to 2.1Ghz. Although Pentiums do have an edge in web browsing and QuakeIII, but thats silly how intensive is web browsing? Performance VS. Cost. Notice how Alienware, Falcon Northwest and VoodooPC all offer the Athlon systems as the top of the line.
