hey guys
I am looking for a new processor
I will need a new motherboard for both, I am currrently using a Ryzen 1700X which is AM4 but the chipset is not supported by zen3 or something silly

I need the processor mostly for VR
should I get AM4 and invest more in a GPU? or will I see imporvement with the new Ryzen for VR tasks?

Welcome to the forums.

Provide the board model and we can tell you if you can update the bios to support Zen3/Ryzen 5000 series. If it is OEM that would explain lack of support.

Regardless, of whether you go AM4 or AM5 the GPU is more important for VR. A Ryzen 5700X would be a great upgrade if it turns out your board can take it. It is a great price here in the U.S.

For the GPU buy as much as you can afford.

For 7700X you need a new motherboard and memory (DDR5). For a drop-in upgrade consider 5800X. It is on sale for $200~250 in many places including AMD.com right now.
