Science is about using electrons to open and close switches. Civilization is about being able to communicate with your friends and family on the other side of the world.

Sorry, you lost me here. Tell me how we are to communicate with friends and family on the other side of the world without some sort of scientific inventions.


I see NO reason on needing a book on how to teach people to act civilly. There are philosophers for that sort of thing. The books I would bring would speed up inventions to get the society to the industrial age and the beginning of healthy living (technology needed to build a well, basic machinery to help construct permanent shelters). The mathematics and physics books are included for the "why" and the "how" questions that the engineering book will raise. If instead I included the Bible or some other religious book, would the reason the steam engine works be because of God's Will?

Science is about controlling things outside ourselves, while civilization is about controlling things inside ourselves...and I could go on. I pity any "civilization" which worships science as its god. The end result of such a thing is a complete lack of civilization. It's as sure as science itself.

In turn, I pity any civilization which refuses to seek wisdom and understand science. The end result is the dark ages.

I wanted to created this thread years ago, like wise inspired by the the 1960 movie Time Machine . However, I could only think of one essential book: The Element by Euclid. I think civilization began when people began to think logically and mathematics is the backbone of all science.

Definitely some type of agricultural guide book to help with proper cultivation of crops,

A basic metallurgy book to help with creating tools,

Perhaps some kind of engineering/construction book to help with building proper buildings.
