Here's the deal:
I have a choice of three tape archive systems...The
ones I don't use will probably go on the auction
block eventually...(But not soon, so sorry, no
inquiries about that yet..)
OK, what I have:
1) HP DLT autoloader, 40/70Gb per tape
2) Seagate Scorpion DDS3 4mm
3) Travan 10/20Gb drive
Now I know what order these are priced at retail. And
I know which is the fastest. My question is more of
a general one: Considering the price of media, THE
RELIABILITY OF THE TAPE FORMAT for longterm storage
and retrieval, and what I could get for the drive if
I sold it, which one would you keep?
Reliability is a HUGE issue here. If there's any
significant advantage to one format over the others,
then the game's over. Reliability is more important than
money. My understanding is that Travan < 4mm ~= DLT,
but feel free to correct me about that.
Also, this is for personal use, not corporate. That means
that I don't want to spend money like water using each
tape once then archiving it. I would like to be able
to reuse tapes in a rotating fashion...
