7 inch is a little small for web pages, but still useable for that. For other things, email, books, movies, videos, games, music, etc, 7 inch is big enough. And very portable.

Never had a bigger tablet so cant help there.

I bought the Nexus 7 for the only reason that I didnt want to lug around a 10" tablet.

For 7 inches, Nexus 7 is the clear winner. Very comfortable to hold, stock Android, very smooth experience. Only negative I have is the screen colors are not very good and the speaker sucks.

A possibly 7 inch alternative is the Kindle Fire HD. You'd really need to be into Amazon content to consider this and having a $80 yearly Amazon Prime subscription highly recommended. You'll get free Amazon instant videos and the Kindle lending library. The screen is better looking thanks to the more accurate colors, and the stereo speakers are pretty good.

For a 10 inch tablet, I still like the iPad. I'm not an Apple fan, but it's hard to resist the iPad and 250,000+ tablet optimized apps. If apps are important to you, then I think the iPad is the clear winner. And I love how good the colors are on the iPad screen (screen quality is big to me).

Nexus 10 is an alternative. It's $100 cheaper, has an even higher DPI screen, front facing speakers. And the Android OS is more fun. I prefer the web browsing experience on Android, Chrome is much better than Safari (but Chrome seems to suck on the iPad). Lack of tablet optimized apps hurts, and I hate the new Android 4.2 UI with the massive buttons rotating around the screen (ugh).

Nexus 7, unless you're also looking to replace your laptop.

Speakers on the Nexus 7 are not impressive, agree on this. Had the original Kindle, it was very slow for me, so i'm going to avoid the HD version... not a kindle fan anymore.

Ipad is $500 for a 16-gig version or $330 for the 16-gig mini-version, however, there is no expandability, through an sd card. Unless you store data on the cloud, 16-gig is all you have to work with. Same goes for the nexus, kindle.

Have a hard time buying a tablet that i can't store my data to a usb or sd card.

Was looking at the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, for $200, it seems to be a nice 7" tablet with expandability.

Guess i will keep looking.

That's a good choice and here's a good deal assuming you have access to a local CostCo which has it in stock.

No costco near me, maybe sam's club will price match. Don't own a laptop. This deal from walmart seems good as well.

Also sams club has the Google Nexus 7 32GB Tablet for $240.

Going back your original question. How do you plan on using your tablet?

Reading, gaming, watching movies, browsing web, etc.?

A bit sad that Amazon only to a TI OMAP 4460 in the Kindle Fire HD. But so far I haven't had any complaints about speed. It's not as fast as the Nexus 7, but it isn't slow either.

But anyway, if you are done with Kindles, the Nexus 7 is a better choice anyway.

It's unfortunate that the best tablets all seem to lack micro SD cards. I really want a micro SD card too, however the sacrifices I'd have to make to get a tablet with micro SD just aren't worth it.

Samsung for example is terrible with updating their tablets. And that Galaxy Tab 2 8GB cost the same as a Nexus 7 16GB. You get a micro SD slot, but you get an inferior screen resolution, 1024x600 is just going to suck on a 7 inch screen. It's only running Android 4.0, so you miss out on the great performance improvements in Android 4.1 and with Samsung's history you may never see Android 4.1. And it only has a TI OMAP 4430, even the Kindle Fire HD is going to look like a speed demon next to this. Way too many sacrifices. And sadly this is one of the better tablets that isn't from Google, Amazon, or B&N (who basically subsidize their tablets to promote their content platforms).

While I wouldn't buy it. Maybe something to look at is the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7. It's got a 1280x800 Super AMOLED Plus display on a 7.7 inch screen, a dual core 1.4GHz Exynos processor (believe it's still decent performance), and it got the Android 4.0 update (sadly no Android 4.1). And it has micro SD.

It's a bit pricey, around $450.

Hell to the no.
Galaxy Tab 2 uses Tegra 2 which is a PoS processor.
Tegra 2 is a two year old processor.
Crappy processor. Crappy resolution on tablet.

Stick with the 32GB Nexus 7 which uses a Tegra 3 processor and has excellent resolution.

I don't get what kind of data people want to store on a tablet that takes so much memory ?

btw, you can use an sd card with the Nexus 7 with an otg cable.

The Kindle Fire HD is much much faster than the original, which I agree was too slow. The Fire HD is just as responsive as the Nexus 7 in my experience, there's no issue with its speed. And the screen and speakers are fantastic. And it has hdmi out. The real issue with the Fire HD is to get the most out of it, like Amazon instant video, you need a Prime membership. And it has to be hacked to add the Google Play store and other Google apps.

If storage is your main concern, the new Nook HD and HD+ have sd slots. The 9 inch HD+ is only $269 so its the price leader in larger tablets. But they also have to be hacked or your limited to Barnes and Noble for your stuff.

knew about the otg cable-but doesn't the nexus have to be rooted for that to work, need a good price on the 8gb or 16gb.

Try out the Kindle HD. Screen and Speakers are impressive. If you don't like it return it to Amazon.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1" and it's fine, but if for actual usability I would not recommend anything that big. 7" seems to be the sweet spot and I would exchange mine for one of those if I could. My Tab largely goes unused.

iPad mini is nice but lacks google maps, from what i hear, apple has terrible navigation apps or they don't work properly. Not a big apple fan to begin with. Right now, i'm leaning towards Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 16GB Titanium Silver (Wi-Fi) - Refurbished for $269. Price point, this is only $20 more than the 32gb Nexus 7.

It's a 10" tablet, not a 7" tablet. Has 1280 x 800 res, Dual-Core 1GHz processor, 16gb storage and sd slot for another 32gb. There is also great support on xda for rooting/mods/etc. The processor may not be as fast as the Nexus, but you get a lot more screen which is a huge bonus.

Coupled with walmart's 2-year accidental protection warranty plan for $36, this is a rock solid.

Every review about the Kindle Fire HD says to avoid it as they have problems with the touchscreen not responding correctly. I had this same problem with the Kindle Fire 1.

I'll wait a few more days to see if there are any price changes before making a purchase.
