Which system should I go with?

Here is the situation. I have an older s939 system that I haven't really used since I bought my Gateway P-6831FX notebook. At any rate, I've started playing AoC, and like everyone else, am looking at ways to improve frame rates, not just for AoC, but other games as well.

Much as I would like to build a new PC, I would really rather not spend the money right now. So I have come up with basically 3 choices.

All resolution is at 1900x1280

Choices are

1. Use the desktop. AMD x2 3800 - have to buy 2gb of ram, and a 8800gt (cost of about $220).

2. Leave the laptop as is. Core 2 Duo 5450 @ 1.67 GHz, 3gb RAM, 7200rpm drive, 8800M GTS 512mb (cost of nothing) I know that the 5450 is not well regarded, but I can't seem to find any direct comparisons of it against the x2 3800. I would assume that it is better.

3. Upgrade the processor on the laptop to a T9300 (cost of about $320). I know that his has improved peoples scores in 3dmark, but I don't care about benchmarks. I don't know if this will translate into a measurable performance improvement in real word applications.

So, any thoughts? The 8800 GTS mobile seems very similar to the 8800 GT desktop (fewer stream processors and clocked slower though). Again, not sure what kind of real world impact these differences would have.

AT seems to have eaten my previous post...

If I were you, I'd see how it plays on the laptop before making an upgrade choice; your laptop is pretty well specced out.

I know that my x2 3800+ @ 2.6ghz and a 8800gts 320mb @ 1680*1050 struggles, even at medium settings. For 1900*1280, I'd want a 8800gts, 8800gtx or even something faster. From what I've gathered AoC likes more GPU power, you'll need something faster then a x2 3800+ @ 2.6ghz once you get a HD3870 X2 or something like that.

So, in the end I doubt that it's worth upgrading your laptop to a t9300 for 320$.

When I play at the laptops native resolution of 1440x900 I can run with the settings on high with no problems. I have to drop down to medium to play at my desktop monitors resolution of 1900x1280. It's playable for sure, but not glass smooth as I would like.

I know the laptop is pretty good, its just that its kind of a pain in the ass using it as desktop, mostly due to quirky little bugs with the display and USB wake up recognition. The other reason is that video driver support for laptops is spotty. I couldn't get any of the drivers from laptopvideo2go to work, so I'm currently using a driver from tweakforce that was published in January.
