Here is the situation. I have an older s939 system that I haven't really used since I bought my Gateway P-6831FX notebook. At any rate, I've started playing AoC, and like everyone else, am looking at ways to improve frame rates, not just for AoC, but other games as well.
Much as I would like to build a new PC, I would really rather not spend the money right now. So I have come up with basically 3 choices.
All resolution is at 1900x1280
Choices are
1. Use the desktop. AMD x2 3800 - have to buy 2gb of ram, and a 8800gt (cost of about $220).
2. Leave the laptop as is. Core 2 Duo 5450 @ 1.67 GHz, 3gb RAM, 7200rpm drive, 8800M GTS 512mb (cost of nothing) I know that the 5450 is not well regarded, but I can't seem to find any direct comparisons of it against the x2 3800. I would assume that it is better.
3. Upgrade the processor on the laptop to a T9300 (cost of about $320). I know that his has improved peoples scores in 3dmark, but I don't care about benchmarks. I don't know if this will translate into a measurable performance improvement in real word applications.
So, any thoughts? The 8800 GTS mobile seems very similar to the 8800 GT desktop (fewer stream processors and clocked slower though). Again, not sure what kind of real world impact these differences would have.
