OK, I think that even though the Xbox 360 does have it's strong points, I am going to go for the PS3, mainly because I want peace of mind about reliability issues.

Get Rainbow Six: Vegas and Call of Duty 4. CoD 4 multiplayer will keep you occupied for a while.

And also, Devil May Cry 4. I heard Enchanted Arms was good (it's available on both systems) but I haven't tried it yet.

I personally like having backwards compatibility, but if you own a working PS2 the backwards compatibility is certainly not an issue if you go with the 40GB model. If you've never owned a PS2, well, that's quite a large gaming library of epic titles (even if some of them are becoming dated), and the extra $100 might be worth it to you

i have a 360, i never play it. i ordered lost odyssey that's gonna be the first game i try to get into with it. i will be picking up a ps3 later this year just for ff13. i probably shouldn't have picked up the 360 in retrospect.

Since you're apparently only a fan of JRPGs, you're probably right.

He doesn't play online 😕.

It's alright, but for the love of baby Jesus, make sure to switch to Japanese voices. Just like most dubs, they're excruciatingly painful.

Definitely get the 360 if you like the game selection...the RROD is really not a big deal with new units.

If you do go with the 360...I would really stress that getting online makes it a LOT more fun with all the multiplayer options and downloadable content.

If I buy the 360 in a brick and mortar store such as Walmart, will I be able to exchange it for a new unit if I fall victim to the RROD during the 3 years?

No. It has to be done through MS.

Unless you buy it at a store like Costco; I believe Sam's Club's return policy is quite good too (maybe even better than Costco's). And since BJ's is a competitor of Costco and Sam's Club, I wouldn't be surprised if they had a similarly liberal return policy.

Slightly off topic but I figured my question will benefit LW07 and others if answered. I only have a membership with BJs right now and have no interest in getting a membership from Costco in the future with exception of all the great things I hear about their return policy. Does anyone have experience with returning items to BJs? Is the return policy the same as Costco or really darn close?

Don't make my mistake and think the PS3 is indestructible. There's been a lot of "disk read errors" going around where the BD just dies and stops recognizing disks. While this probably isn't as common as RRoD, it's still a problem. Just check out the official PS3 forums, there's at least 1 report of it a day. I'd still get a PS3 over 360 though. Buy it from a place with 30/90 days direct exchange.

Games for PS3:
Devil May Cry 4
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Ratchet & Clank
Heavenly Sword (very short and 'similar' to DMC4, so wait until it's ~$40)
Resistance

I have the first 3 in that list and have to say DMC4 is the best of them all. It's no exclusive, but without a doubt, I had the most fun with it. Don't worry about the "no games" claim for PS3 that's commonly thrown around. Once you have the system, you'll look for stuff and find a bunch of stuff you like.

PS3 because:

1. It doubles as a Blu Ray Player -- one of the few blu ray players that has upgradeable firmware so you can upgrade to the newer blu ray profiles

2. You said you aren't interested in downloadable games yet I think some of the best games on PS3 are downloadable such as everyday shooter, flOw, and the upcoming pixel junk eden

3. It is graphically superior to the xbox360, has HDMI, build in hard drive etc.

4. Has more potential in terms of cool looking games coming out because it is newer and developers haven't really started developing specifically for the ps3 yet and when they do that the games will be impressive

4. No RROD issues and PS3 is far more reliable of a console

He's only got an SDTV so blu-ray and the HD isn't going to help him much.

SDTV and no online play...

Id almost lean towards the ps3 just because the current number of single player games and the future games coming out...

360 does have a good library but id be pressed to say that 70% of the 360 experience is online...am i wrong? Basically when my net is down, my ps3 goes on...

I'd like to see a PS3 in action but mostly for playing HiDef movies. I've heard the PS3 has a great (some say the best) BluRay player. I've got the 360 HD-DVD add-on and while it works I hate it because of the very limited remote/features. I dislike it so much I picked up a Toshiba A3 for $99.99.

I didn't go with the PS3 as a Blu-ray player for two reasons. First, the remote is bluetooth, so I can't use my Harmony remote with the PS3. Theres a usb workaround that will give me most of the controls, but I still haven't found one that will turn the PS3 off.

The other reason is that the PS3 doesn't support DTS-HD Master Audio. There are rumors that it may, but nothing from Sony. I find DTS MA to be my favorite of the new HD audio formats, so the fact that Sony hasn't put it in the PS3 was a deal breaker for me.

If neither is important to you, then the PS3 is a great Blu-ray player. It pretty much already is a 2.0 profile player, and will only need a firmware update to make it so. I find the picture quality to be better on my Panasonic BD30, but the PS3 is no slouch. Factor in the fact that you can get the 40GB PS3 now for $300 if you apply for the Sony credit card, and it just gets better.

You fail at reading.

Oh I forgot that:

5. PSN is free, home is coming out..

6. built in wifi

Yes, those are two more features that he has no use for considering what he said in his OP.

I thought LW07 made his PS3 decision days ago, this thread just won't die. 😛

WiFi is still important even if you don't do online gaming because many games get periodic patches.

He's already decided on the PS3, but of the ~40 360 games I have, there are only a few that I've even played online (but the ones I have played online, I've played extensively - Halo 3 and CoD 4).

Go with the PS3. There are some features that you have no use for now, but if you want to try Blu ray or online gaming down the line its free (not including the cost of the game or movies). Then buy Burnout and Drakes Fortune!

You made a bad choice. The PS3 has fewer games, the controller is not very comfy, and I don't really buy the reliability thing. There are far more xbox's out there and it has been around longer. the PS3 could prove out to be just as bad. Plus you are covered for 3 years on the 360 if you do run into RRoD issues.

A lot of developers are pulling resources away from PS3 game development due to poor sales and increasing resources for 360 development. I think you'd already made up your mind before asking the question, but I think you are going to be disappointed with the game library for at least another year.
