Which System should I get?

I'm only going to be using it for gaming, and I am not going to be playing online, and I'm not interested in any downloadable content. I really like both of them, but can only get one. I like the selection of games for the 360, but am also looking at the PS3 because of the Red Ring of Death type issues that I keep hearing about on forums concerning the 360.

So, which of the two should I get?

Whatever system has more of the games you like to play.
The end.

I wouldn't be concerned too much about the RRoD, as you're covered under a 3yr warranty for that type thing, and new 360's seem to be much less prone to trouble.

I would say, though, that you should *really* look into downloadable content. There are some great games for both PS3 and 360 that you can only download.

----------------

Really, there's only one true way to go about it -- Look at the top games for each system and see what you like.

Personally, there were LOTS of other factors that made me choose PS3 over my 360 (I gave my 360 to brother), like free online play, quieter system, Blu-Ray, etc.

If you only want games, take a long look at the games for each system and purchase accordingly. You really can't go wrong with either selection.
You might also want to look at 2008's upcoming games. 2007 was a great year for Xbox releases, and 2008 looks to be PS3's stronger year (last year was sorta weak).

The newer 360s don't seem to be very susceptible to the RROD. Even then, if you do get it, you have the 3 year warranty. I've heard of quite a few people's blu-ray drives going dead, so neither console is free of worries - none ever have been. The warranty procedure for the 360 is very streamlined.

So, the real question is - which system has more games that you like?

3 year warranty. Or buy it at Costco and don't worry.

Look at Gamerankings.com for the game selection - you can search by system and see the top games.

Do you have a strong preference for one controller or the other? I have both systems, but buy all of the cross-platform games on the system that has the better controller (in my opinion).

Since you aren't really going to be using the online capabilities of the 360, then just look at the individual games. What kind of games do you like playing?

depends on what kinds of games you like, or which ones you are a fan of. also you should reevaluate online gaming, its a big part of console games these days. do you have any desire to watch blu-ray movies? downloadable content is free and demos can help out a lot when deciding to buy a new game or not, and there are quite a few gems in the downloadable game selections. I dont think you should completely ignore the online functions and downloadable content on either console.

Pretty much what everyone has said already. Look at the current library and also look at some games being released in next 6 months or so.

 OP - if you have a TV with HDMI inputs, order the HDMI cable from monoprice.com NOW so you don't find yourself compelled to buy one from a local store for $40+.

I don't have an HDTV, just a standard TV with S-Video. My favorite games are action games such as shooters and flight simulators, and I do like a good driving game every now and then as well.

And if I should go Xbox 360, which one should I get, the Xbox 360 Arcade version with the 256mb memory card or the one with the 20GB hard drive, since all I will be doing is saving games on them?

If I go PS3, then what games should I get to start out with?

Same question if I get the 360.

Based on what you've said so far I'd go with the 360 premium (20gig HD) since I believe that has more/better shooter, and racing games on it. Bioshock, COD 4, Orange Box, Halo 3 all seem to be pretty good games for it.

The PS3 does have a quite a few games that are supposed to be good coming out this year too.

I would love to go 360, and I hear about the decrease in the RROD issues and the 3 year warranty, but I am still skeptical.

If I buy the 360 in a brick and mortar store such as Walmart, will I be able to exchange it for a new unit if I fall victim to the RROD during the 3 years?

In addition, will I need the 20Gig hard drive if all I will do is save game progress on it or will the 256mb card of the $280 Xbox 360 suffice, and will the $280 Xbox 360 have a greater chance of the RROD problems than the Premium version?

No, not at Walmart. My brother bought the Arcade version here at our local Walmart in October 07. They wanted nothing to do with it. Well, let's just say, as I type this it is in Texas being repaired. Going on two weeks.

Although he say's, once it comes back, he's ebaying it and buying a PS3.

I don't buy any high price electronics at Walmart.

No. It has to be done through MS.

Unless you buy it at a store like Costco; I believe Sam's Club's return policy is quite good too (maybe even better than Costco's). And since BJ's is a competitor of Costco and Sam's Club, I wouldn't be surprised if they had a similarly liberal return policy.

If you REALLY will never download anything on it, you should be fine with the Arcade. Unless you're stuck in dialup hell, I don't know why you'd never download anything. Microsoft screws you on the hard drive if you buy it separately, so think about it.

It was actually really good advice... I had to hook up my PS3 with composite video for several days until I got my HDMI cable from monoprice, because I bought it on a whim. If he knows he's going to buy one or the other, he might as well buy the cable now.

OK, I think that even though the Xbox 360 does have it's strong points, I am going to go for the PS3, mainly because I want peace of mind about reliability issues.

Do you play new games on your PC?

If so, there are probably a similar amount of console exclusive shooters on both the 360 and PS3. If not, then there are more shooters exclusive to the 360 with BioShock, Gears of War, Halo 3 heading up the list. The Orange Box, Call of Duty 4, and the Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter games are cross-platform games that are all pretty highly rated. The PS3 has Resistance:FoM and Unreal Tournament 3, but UT3 is coming out on the 360.

Flight Simulator is not really a big genre on consoles. I know Ace Combat 6 was supposed to be pretty good, but I don't think that was really a "simulator". I'm not sure what the PS3 has in that field.

For racing games, the 360 has the Forza and PGR series while the PS3 has MotorStorm and Gran Turismo 5 (later this year). We've been having weekly Forza nights for the last six weeks or so every Wednesday and they're a lot of fun. Other than those, there are a lot of cross-platform racing games like the Burnout series.

And since you have made a choice, Do you plan on playing any PS2 games ? If not, just get the 40 gig version.

That is the one I have, and I must tell you, it is absolutely silent, and cool. After 6 hours of Devil May Cry 4, the air coming out the back was barely even warm.

Reliability is the *only* reason I bought the PS3 over the 360.

And you cannot forget about Final Fantasy XIII later this year and Metal Gear Solid 4.
