If your looking for pure quantity, then the WII wins. It has access to RPGs from NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, GENESIS, TURBO GRAPHIX, and C64

No, it has access to whatever is on VC. If you're an RPG fan, it's reasonable, but not amazing.

I would say PS2 is the winner here hands down.

Final Fantasy 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 10-2, 12, and Tactics. Chrono Trigger comes with FF4 as well.

Dragon Quest series.

Xenogears and Xenosaga 1, 2, and 3.

Vagrant Story, Wild Arms series, Castlevania SOTN, and I'm sure there's several more I'm forgetting.

All that said, with a wife and 2 boys fighting for screen time in the living room, I get more screen time with my Nintendo DS. Just finished Final Fantasy III DS. Once I complete 1, 2, 5, and 8 I'll have finished my quest to play them all from start to finish. I'm on Disc 3 of FF8, just started up 5 on PS after finishing 3 on DS (job system FTW! Reminds me a lot of Tactics' leveling system.). I have Final Fantasy Origins on PS for 1 and 2, but I'll save that until last, as I'm hoping for a NDS remake like FF3 got.

We are also here to educate people. We know that the PS2 has more RPGs than any other system. We are giving him an option that he may not have thought of initially.

If he's only buying a "next-gen" console to play the types of games he described, then I wouldn't recommend any. I would recommend a PS2, though, in the off-chance he doesn't have one already.

If I was into text-based adventure games, a PS3 probably wouldn't satisfy me, but that doesn't mean I should rule out getting a Commodore 64 to get my Zork fix.

Edit: On second thought, if a current console is a must, I'd go 360. From what I've seen, fans of JRPGs treat them like pizza and sex - even when they're bad, they're still pretty good. Infinite Undiscovery, Blue Dragon, etc fill this requirement.

Wink = joke.

You = fail.

Besides, if he really wants RPGs, he should consider a PS2.

in all seriousness, if you WANT a next gen system, with the consideration of jrpgs, pick up the 360. i did, after having the ps3 for a year and realizing that there just was not enough games for it. you can do a forum search, and the same question has been asked, with roughly the same conclusion.

360 now but PS3 by the end of the year. Demon's Souls (aRPG) and White Knight Chronicles are just too good to pass up.

Lost Odyssey is the only real decent classic RPG I've played on any of the next gen systems...

All the rest were pretty lame.

I'd have to recommend the PS2 as well.

WKC got blasted by every review I've read of it. I'm not sure why you think it's good.

Demon's Souls, on the other hand, got reasonably good reviews, but I've heard it's insanely hard.

:thumbsup: For this generation, Xbox 360.

Guess what, I can actually SAVE my Game saves onto USB drive and not have to buy a Microsoft memory card just to backup saved games. That alone makes XBox 360 suck.

Because you've never played it.

Not trolling, just stating a fact, and considering I do own a XBox 360, its a justified opinion.

It's basically irrelevant to the discussion at hand. That's why it's trolling.

Facts are never irrelevant. :p But yes, in general, for classic RPGs, go PS2.

Whatever you buy, don't automatically assume an Xbox 360 will play Xbox games.

Mine didn't play KotOR or Fable properly (the only two RPGs I tried on it).

For current gen consoles clearly the 360.

For old school rpg awesomeness PS2

For handheld RPG gaming bliss the DS

P.S. PSP has some decent RPGs too.

No idea which console has more RPG's or the best, but right now, I'm playing Eternal Sonata on the PS3 and enjoying it immensely. The graphics and music are beautiful, although the story is a bit weird. You get to have Frederic Chopin (the 19th century pianist) as one of your characters. :confused:

Thanks to all those who posted PS2 RPG names. I have a lot to catch up on. :)

the ps2 easily has the most high quality rpg games ever. current gen systems have a few good ones...developed by North American & European companies. As far as Japanese developed rpgs, there aren't any IMO.

also the ps2 isn't really "old school" at all... I saw a few people call it that. merely because the hardware is older, the majority of the games on the ps2 have all the essential game types, elements & complexities of current systems. they just don't have an hd output or built in hdd, that's all.

I still haven't finished Odinsphere or FF XII yet! Think I might throw one of them in.

PS2... but only because they ported most of the great classics of SNES -- where the root of my nostalgia comes from. Emulators, ftw.
