Which switch would be optimal?

We have an old WS-C5000 switch running some old OS for a specific LAN we have. From what I can tell, it's not doing much other than switching and is huge for the amount of ports that are actually being used (36).

So my plan was to replace it with a 3750 L3 switch and plug it into our 6509 instead of the 5000 and that way I actually understand the config layout and commands and know how to configure stuff. Does this sound reasonable or is the 5000 better than the newer 3750?

5000 config: All the ports are in vlan 1 with full/auto

It's dead Jim. I tried back in 1998 but he was on 'is last leg. IP and gig etherent are what killed him Jim. But he's dead.

We heard rumor of a tribe of cpals that had managed to use advanced technology unknown the this universe to keep him alive. But that's not really alive, he was barely functioning not even forwarding a kilopacket per second. That's no kind of life Captain.

He's off bridging token ring, ethernet and FDDI is some long lost time string. Forever stuck in that place between dead and more dead. Word is the Federation is going to wage war against the cpals over such cruelty.

Those cpals even made the old man run LANE, as if they hadn't tortured him enough. It's madness captain. We MUST do SOMEthing.
 
😀 That's what I figured... I've never really thought about it too much, but the more I study for my CCNA and learn how/why things work the way they do the more I realize how much stuff needs to be changed/fixed.

Umm, until recently there were many things CatOS could do that native IOS couldn't. CatOS rocked in how easy it was to use, really exceled at QoS as well.

what happens when a network tech drops acid?
 
I still have a couple of older CATOS 1980G's out there. They still play really nice with all the current IOS stuff. They are mostly the "printer" switches with a few IP phones on them since the IP phones are all 100base. I wouldn't use them for the main system anymore but they are doing just fine with what they are doing now.
