I'm actually also in a market for a sub.. but since I live in an apartment, I actually don't want it to be excessively powerful  I have a feeling that even the Dayton 10" would be more than enough for me.. I'm also considering the Acoustech H100 for about $250 shipped from Overstock.

/Keeps waiting for the Dayton 12" to come back in stock

They use the aura 1808 which was bought by http://seismicsubs.com/ who improved on the design even further.

The XS is kind of a strange, underported beast. It takes roughly two of them to equal a single Acoustic Visions Pinnacle Everest

Don't bet on that, the Wilson is huge and pretty damn efficient. It produces over 112db at 16 hertz. The ports are small but if designed well it will limit port noise.

The Everest is an interesting design but there is no free lunch. Putting two 15" in a small enclosure and then using Passive Radiators instead of Ports won't give you any more output. It's just a way to get around the port length that wouldn't work in an enclosure that small.

The best way to go is to get a 18" siesmic 8196 and design an enclosure yourself and then get a decent amp. The whole super sub project could be done for under $1000.

You should check out AVS forums. There are guys there who actually have the XS and have upgraded.

Upgrade to what ?

You can build more subs if you need more output. I have installed sixteen 18" in a large hall for people who wanted effortless bass. There is no finer bass transducer though then the 8196 and I have heard a lot in the last 15 years.

Contrabass. There's also a guy who built an enclosure with more ideal port sizes for those 1808's.

Klipsch subs are not great for the money.

agreed.

SVS and HSU are great for the money.

And yes, you should just save the extra money. Most subs under 500 are piss poor performers. outside of the DIY world

Fixed

Fair enough. As long as they follow plans.

Lots of folks just take a driver and stick in a box of a given volume and wonder why it sounds so crappy.

I'd take my own testing over plans any day...
