Which Style Rifle: AR10 or AR15?

Mostly for plinking but would need to serve a dual purpose as a perimeter defense weapon.

How far out are each of them good to? Local range has a 300 yard course and I believe there may be a 600 yard range close by.

How's the recoil on a gas 308?

500 rounds of 308 is about $50 more than 223, that's not bad.

308 has a lot more 'reach out and touch you' effect. Ideally you could get both, but if you can only get one for now, 308 all the way.

<3 223's

Can't say I've ever plinked from more than a couple hundred yards out though. 600 yards? Really?

Do you reload?

I guess it doesn't matter, it seems 308 and 223 are "similar" in price.

I personally would go with 223. It is much more standardized and things are "similar" across manufacturing lines instead of everyone having their own version of a 308. Same with piston setups.

My only experience with a gas 308 is a friend's lmt and as scientific as my memory is, I'd say about "half" the recoil on my bolty 308.

Same friend has had his 18" larue stealth out when we did 1k with 75gr hornady tap. He was putting up a decent showing still at 800, was lobbing it by 900 and didn't bother with 1k. A better shooter probably would have put up better results, but it was much easier for me to run 175gr.

Right now, I don't shoot enough to reload. But I do have a friend that has a nice Dillon progressive...

AR-15 gets my vote.

Then again if there was any real serious trouble back home I probably would have grabbed my FN FAL w/30 round mag.

All I have to compare is my friend's old FN FAL (.308) and my Mini-14 (.223.) The FN kicks like a mule and is heavy for a small guy like me, however, anything that .308 round hits is D E A D dead. The Mini 14 you can go spastic on the trigger and not worry about recoil.

Just depends on what you are really doing with it. Target shooting and plinking? Get the 556. It will reach out to 600 yards but your pushing the limit.

If you really want to kill something at 600 yards, 308. That round will really reach out and touch you.

556 is a lot easier to shoot. You can go out and shoot 500 rounds of 556 and have a blast. Do that with 308 and you may need some icy hot the next day.

If mobility is a concern at all the 308 rifle is heavier and the ammo is considerably heavier/room eating.

Both are good rounds with different purposes. Unless you are actually hunting with it go with the 556.

To me, "plinking" and .308 don't really belong in the same sentence. Not that I have anything against the .308, as I do plan on getting some flavor of semi-auto .308 at some point, I just don't think it would be as enjoyable to send a couple hundred rounds of 7.62 downrange in a single session as it is 5.56. Recoil in an AR10 is definitely manageable - in fact it is less than my bolt action .270win, but it isn't anything as lite as the AR15.

As far as range goes, a 5.56 round can definitely be effective out to 600yds, and anything inside that range shouldn't be a problem with quality ammo and a decent optic. Granted, it won't carry as much energy downrange as the 7.62, but it will still get the job done.

A friend of mine has an AR-10 and an AR-15... I have an AR-15... He never brings his AR-10 for 'plinking' at my place (I have 20 acres to play with)... He says the rounds are just too expensive. I bought 2000 rounds for my AR-15, but have yet to even 'plink' with it, as I consider 223 to be too expensive for plinking. I may buy a 22LR for screwing around.
