Yep, it could mean "which state has the most shoreline?"

if so then the answer is Maine, its shoreline is so long that if you stretch it out it is as long as the whole east coast

dont beleive me look it up

Uh, no. Alaska.

The coastline of Alaska is longer than the entire coastline of the lower-forty-eight states of the United States.

Alaska has the longest coastline, approximately 10,700 kilometers (about 6,640 miles), which makes it longer than the coastline of the ?lower? 48 states combined. If all the islands of Alaska are included, the amount of coastline increases five-fold.

Alaska: The longest coastline in the U.S., 6,640 miles, greater than that of all other states combined

How many more times do I have to look it up? ;)

I'm really surprised that this is even up for debate. By land mass, Alaska is almost as large as the western U.S. Add to that the fact that the state is a gigantic peninsula, and then add in the Aleutian island archipelago and it's no contest.

ok maines is longest of the conential; US states close enough

and alaska is basically canada so it doesnt really count

Well, AK obviously has the most shoreline by a lot (looking at a globe, it's easy to see that it's got like 8 to 10 times more than California. . . Or Florida. . . Or Maine?--LOL suckers!), but HI is the only state fully surround by water.

I beg to disagree... all states are completely surrounded by water.

But that's only if you include not only all those bays and harbors, but every lake and river as well, right?

I'm sure Michigan is up there as well. It's surrounded by three great lakes, one it's surrounded by twice.

Alaska has more than the rest of the US combined... so yeah Maine isn't exactly close. If you count the entire US, then maybe it's close.

Also it's cool that we're the farthest North, Eastern, and Western state in the US.

since it is a "brainteaser" , i think the correct answer is

they are all equally surrounded by water, atlantic ocean and pacific ocean, etc, etc
if "adjacent" or other qualifiers are not added, then all the states have just as much water "surrounding" them as every other state

Alaska has the most coastline, followed by Michigan, then California, and then Florida.

If it is not a trick question (meaning the answer has to be an island....thus Hawaii), I would say Alaska.

Alaska is both east and west of the 180th meridian, so it is actually in both the eastern and western hemispheres. You have to head pretty far east to wrap around the planet and hit Alaska, but it is a technically correct statement.
