How could it not be CA? 😕

what are the schools in CA?

Stanford, Berkeley, Claremont colleges, USC, UCLA, UCSD, not to mention the rest of the UC system and other various private universities.

the rest of the UC system sucks

UCR? UCSB? places like Boston University or Boston College is better than most of the UCs

UCLA, USC, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UCSF, UCSD all >/= BU or BC.

Cal Poly SLO and Pomona are also quite good schools.

It's purely regional. To people in MA, Boston U is a great school, but to people in CA, Boston U is just another college.

Wow, your profile shows PA. Unfortunately for you, Cornell is in NY.

Not according to the US News rankings.

Stanford - 4
CIT - 6
Berkeley - 21
UCLA - 25
USC - 27
UCSD - 35
UCDavis, UCIrvine, UCSB - all tied for 44th

You have to define what you mean by "best".

Whoever pointed out that regional status matters more is probably correct. Out here in VA, we don't give a shit which UC school you went to, but if you went to UVA, Penn, or even W&M, it matters. In CA, you probably don't even know what W&M is and generally know that UVA is a good school, but you know which of the UCs are better, etc.

National rankings are mostly meaningless outside of the top handful of schools. Especially true in the legal profession, I've found.

But to answer the OPs question, no state has the sheer number of quality schools present in CA. Of course, no state has the sheer number of schools present in CA.

It's really, really hard to not say MA has the best schools, just for the presence of Harvard and MIT. History probably plays a big part of that, though. That and I'm from the Northeast - but I cant stand Sox fans. So CA wins.

Yes, I know. I got Cornell and CM mixed up for some reason and wound up putting them both down. Yeah, I'm a dumbass. 😛

Harvard, MIT and Stanford, Cal Tech pretty much same caliber.

california is way bigger than MA though. Would be more interesting to compare new england vs. california, it which case it would be total domination by NE

If I'm scanning resumes, Harvard and MIT are going to jump out at me more than Cal Tech and Stanford, sorry. It's not to say I don't recognize those schools and how good they are, but around here the former carry more weight.

Then you are a horrible recruiter you are passing on same caliber students. If there is a marginal difference it's minuscule.

theres no diff between stanford and harvard. between MIT and CalTech, I would think the caltech kids are weirder. Gotta be a special person to want to go to such a nerdy school

Cornell?

Cornell wasn't the only dubious submission

Cornell is an outstanding school. He was questioning Cornell because it's NOT in Pennsylvania, as has been pointed out.

Caltech is a better science school by far. It's a weaker engineering school.

Three top 3 engineering schools are MIT, Stanfurd, and Cal.

Berkeley and USC have top 10 business programs.

UCSF and StanFUrd are top 10 med schools. UCLA is just shy of top 10.

Stanford and Berkeley have top 10 law programs.

UCLA, Berkeley, and Stanford have top 10 teaching programs.

The only region that comes close is MA.

CA hands down.

BTW when you include schools w/o PhDs, Cal Poly SLO, Harvey Mudd, Pomona, Claremont McKenna, Pepperdine, blah blah blah all stand out. CA once again.

BTW only 2 of those schools are worth competing with some of the top schools from CA, and those 2 on the list are CMU and UPenn. Hell UCSD trumps the rest of the list.

I guess i mixed what dubious meant regarding cornell vs. the ones I listed. imeant cornell was dubious in the sense that it wasnt in PA. and the other ones because they're not considered elite colleges

You're right. Why did I look at the undergrad list? Hahaha MBA programs Stanford and Cal all the way for top 10. SC and LA are somewhere in the teens.
