Which SSD to go for??, as ssd failure rate is concerned...

hi all,

I m planning to get my first ssd and worried which one to go for.

As I have reviewed tones of reviews I am very much concerned abt ssd failure. I have 3 ssd short listed

Corsiar force GT 120GB 130-135$
Corsiar force 3 120GB 120$
OCZ Vertex 4 128GB 150$

amongst the above the OCZ is the most expensive, and there is only 10-15$ difference in both the corsair's here in India. ppl plz help me out with the reviews and suggestions. The crucial and plexter's are still not available in India and the samsung's 830 is much expensive then the above listed three. I am open to any new recommendations within my budget of 120$ and ssd's available in India.

I can see the crucial M4 128gb not much expensive than the OCZ vertex4.

Personally, I trust the "Intel 120GB 330 Series SSD"more than the OCZ vertex 4, other people might disagree though ..

Don't be cheap, get a samsung. If you don't wanna pay for it, that means reliability is not that important for you afterall...

Short on money, Samsung 830 is much expensive for me. I short listed the force 3 GT as its 20$ cheaper than vertex and crucial m4 and has the fastest read write speeds amongst the most of the ssd's. Reliability is needed but can corsair quality be trusted here??

Need corsair force GT or force 3 reviews. I get 3 years warranty on these products, is it worth?? and will it be better choice for my motherboard sata controller??

Look around you, in this forum. You'll see people swear by three brands/models alone: Crucial M4, Samsung 830/830, and previous-gen Intel (I hear rumblings about the newer stuff).

Everything else is a gamble.
Why would you even ask this question, then? Go ahead, be cheap, it's only your data, and we need guinea-pigs to post their horror stories here.

As for speed, man... just WHAT kind of data transfers are you doing? Do you really think that, in real life, the transfer rate difference will be noticeable?

Having read just about all the anecdotal reviews of SSDs on this forum, I have bought two Samsung 830s. They are now among the cheapest since the 840 has been announced.

I would imagine that even in India, 830s will drop in price to make room for the 840s.

If it was me, I'd get the OCZ.

Not out of any love for OCZ, but I'd much prefer the Marvell controller to the Sandforce controller in the Corsair drives.

Anywasys I want to use it as only boot drive + within these 3yrs the whole world of SDD's gonna change, isn't the corsair force 3 or force GT is a good choice then??? even OCZ vertex and agility??

Lo0sing boot data is not a big deal and I only use my boot drive to install programs and everythhing else will be stored in my WD green Mammoth. thinking a buying one more WD green to store data.(saving money for this too

Crucial m4 and new corsiar neutron ssd's, they both come with same price tag. are the new lamb controllers good?? this is new stuff, hope some of you must be reviewing it.

You should then consider the Intel 330 120gb,
It is cheaper than most other in its size.
It has the same controller used in the corsairs, wish has bad reputation, but with a much better firmware by intel, and there wasn't allot of people saying bad things about it.
It is slightly slower in benchmarks, but it is not going to be noticeable in anything in real world performance.

time is money. I would rate $100-200/hr for what I do. So while being a cheapazz is in my nature.. If you have the time to lose, go get that mad dope $279 512gb ocz broham.

intel 330 = b-stock intel 520, which is every 520 made up until a few months ago due to an AES bug in the controller

If you enjoy going through the frustration of loosing your system for a week, re-installs, restores and RMAs go for any of them. You just may be lucky !

Thanks we really do care about putting out quality produce but at a $130 right now for the Intel® SSD 520 120GB it is hard to beat the Intel SSD 520 with better performance and 5 year warranty.

There are others that I currently trust more than Intel in the SSD department.

As a general rule of thumb:

Avoid Sandforce drives, even those co-developed by Intel (e.g., 330 series). Too many problems, why risk it? Non-Sandforce Intel is very reliable and durable.

Samsung 830 SSDs are very reliable and fairly durable though write amplification can get nasty-high in worst-case scenarios.

Crucial M4 is also very reliable and very durable, maybe even more durable.

Plextor uses different types of NAND and controllers but their M5S series is apparently very similar to Crucial M4, though I suspect with less highly-rated durability due to all the other cost cutting that went into that drive (it doesn't even come with screws).

Not unless you want to buy an SSD without a warranty. I bet Samsung won't honor gray market stuff like that.

I agree with what some others have said about. If you can't pay you probably shouldn't play. SSDs are luxury items and still a growing tech.

If you're resorting to buying older tech or buying from unconventional places, I think you should probably hang on to that money. That's just my opinion, so take it for what it is. At a minimum I'd buy a Samsung 320 or Crucial M4. That seems to be where the tech has stabilized a bit in regards to reliability.

I don't have enough knowledge about SSDs to say for sure, but I can say that I never buy flash from anyone other than an authorized reseller.

If you want to risk it go ahead. But be warned that there are tons of falsified flash cards out there, so don't be surprised if falsified SSDs exist as well.

It is easy to beat it. The 128GB Plextor M5P is $130, with a 5-year warranty, better performance, 8GB extra space, and no Sandforce garbage to put up with.
